Cynthia Delaney has been photographing nature, wildlife, and travel imagery for over twenty years. Cynthia was raised in Winnemucca, Nevada where her love of the western lifestyle was inspired by many years of riding horseback across country and back road journeys with her parents and two brothers. Cynthia continues to explore the great outdoors and cultural presence of the west but she also enjoys exploring the world. Her travels have taken her to the far corners with recent expeditions to Ecuador, Arctic Norway, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Botswana, Iceland, and China.
Cynthia’s work has been widely used in a variety of publications and exhibits and she has received a number of prestigious awards and grants for her photographic work including several from Nevada Arts Council. Her images and writings have appeared in numerous books and magazines including Country Magazine, Montana Magazine, Montana Outdoors, Nature Photographer, Nevada Magazine, Nevada Rancher, Northern Nevada Lifestyle, Range, Writer’s Journal, and many other editorial and advertising sources. Her work is currently represented by The Image Finders stock agency.
Cynthia attended the University of Alabama where she received a degree in creative writing with minors in art and anthropology. She later earned a degree in photography through New England School of Photography. In 2008 she received a Master’s degree in documentary photography at Lesley University. During her undergraduate years she worked as a forensic photographer for the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Aside from her current freelance work Cynthia holds a position as photography instructor at Great Basin College where she teaches a variety of traditional and digital courses. She is also a regular correspondent for the Elko Daily Free Press. Cynthia leads photo travel workshops in the western United States and abroad. Cynthia was selected by a panel from the NES Artist Residency Program to serve as artist in residence in Skagaströnd, Iceland during August 2009. She documented the way of life in this rural fishing village and captured the isolated appeal of northern Iceland. A body of her Nevada images was exhibited during her stay in Iceland.
Cynthia currently lives in Elko, Nevada. Her husband Ronnie Joe Varnell is a frequent travel companion, amateur photographer, and ever helpful assistant in the field.
