Happy Birthday Res Artis!

Today Res Artis celebrates its 20th anniversary as the largest worldwide network of artist residencies.

Amsterdam, February 20th, 2013.

As an association of over 400 centers, organisations, and individuals in over 70 countries, each of our members is dedicated to offering artists, curators, and all manner of creative people the essential time and space away from the pressures and habits of every-day life, an experience framed within a unique geographic and cultural context.

Through Res Artis, organisations become part of a global community of colleagues engaged in dialogue through our face-to-face meetings, projects, initiatives, and virtually through our website and members only group.

Res Artis began as a volunteer organisation in 1993 to address the need for face-to-face meetings of colleagues and to create a crucial forum for the exchange of ideas. The number of artist residencies has grown exponentially since then. These artist residencies are centres with programmes that promote artist exchanges between diverse international and regional communities.  They range from formal, well-funded government organisations to grassroots artist-run initiatives. The artists who benefit from such residency programmes work in all disciplines,  including writing, music and composition, dance, performance art, theatre, media and new technology, and visual arts. The demography of the artists spans a broad range of class, ethnic, and cultural affiliations, with artists participating from every continent.

During the past 20 years, we have held 13 General Meetings and 8 Regional Meetings in many diverse countries around the globe. These encounters contributed to thousands of attendants and several network-wide projects and initiatives that utilize the experiences and resources within our membership and benefit the residency field by encouraging an understanding of the work of residential arts centres and their catalytic role in the development of art and ideas in the contemporary world.

Michael Haerdter, a founding member as well as the first president of the Res Artis, tells the story of the start of Res Artis. 'Res Artis : The very Beginning'

Far from 1993, the new online trends have also reinvented the way that artists access information online. Res artis continually incorporates the most relevant means to reach artists, academics, and cultural workers and thereby lead in creating the most relevant virtual space and listing directory of artist’s residencies spaces and publication of news and upcoming deadlines. Nowadays, our website is viewed by more than 2.000 unique daily visitors; we have more than 24.000 subscribers to our trilingual bi-monthly newsletter and more than 43.000 fans on our Facebook fan page.

“Res Artis is proud to mark this momentous milestone, due in large part to the support and feedback we have received from a large number of cultural organisations and artists as well. As a worldwide network of artistic residencies we strive to continue increasing our programming and quality of our services which at the moment include the ResSupport Program; Res Artis Awards, Regional Meetings, Thematic Meetings, and, of course, our General Meetings. We look forward to another 20 years and the exciting developments in the fast-growing field of residencies” said Mario Caro, current president of the Board of Directors.
