In Memoriam: Rudolf Brünger 1954 - 2016

We are saddened by the passing of Rudolf Brünger on March 23rd, 2016.

Last week we heard the sad news about the passing of Rudolf Brünger on March 23rd. Rudolf had been ill for some months with cancer. He fought bravely, but in the end his body gave out, and we have lost a dear friend and brother. He was still a young man, and we are poorer for this, as are all those who knew him and had yet to know this gentle, kind and dynamic man.

We worked closely with Rudolf in the leadership of Res Artis from 2000-2008. He was an inspirational leader with a creative open mind and a generous heart. During that time he devoted an enormous amount of time to helping make Res Artis a truly international network. He contributed to the strategic planning process that took place over a two year period, traveling with us to Los Angeles where the plan was thought through and written. His ideas and insights into community were essential to opening up the network to new members and partners and creating a fresh diversity of opinion and participation. This planning process culminated with one of our larger conferences which he produced in Berlin, included working with the Asia Europe Foundation to bring over 40 Asia members for the first time to a Res Artis conference. His energy was unflagging, and along with the other officers helped bring Res Artis to a new level of professionalism and visibility which truly helped artists worldwide.

But more than anything, his friendship was what was valued, and no conference where he was expected will ever seem the same again with him not there.

As one of the founding member of UFA Fabrik he brought us his special vision on society and life which is to today and even more now, a vision which is strongly needed in our complex times. We are thinking of his colleagues at UFA, his partner and family and wish them strength to cope with his loss.

We miss Rudolf as a very dear and close friend.

Michael Haerdter, Laurens Schumacher, Clayton Campbell, Maria Tuerlings,
past-presidents of Res Artis.
