Spring 2017- Exhibition

Reflection on the horizon - The island.

On May 18th, the Altos de Chavon Cultural Center Foundation will present the work of photographer José Ramírez as a result of his participation as artist in residence during the spring 2017.  Ramírez explains:

"The horizon is the limit of the visible and the framework for what is possible: it limits and at the same time defines. The horizon is a region of uncertainty that ends up being an invitation, an opportunity. The horizon moves with us wherever we go, thus becoming a personal reference.
Maximum freedom, beyond independence, is the capacity for self-determination and self-justification; hence the horizon, as personal experience, is the closest to the experience of freedom.
The almost constant presence of the sea horizon is the essential circumstance of an island and therefore, consciously or not, conditions the perspective of its inhabitants. Seascapes are, as Hiroshi Sugimoto plans in his work, to constitute time machines and objects of meditation.
In this project, based on a photographic record of the coast, I propose a visual reconstruction of the country's marine horizon through panoramic photographs of large format, reconstructed and presented without spatial references. They are marine horizons presented as non-places, spaces of transience, anthropological places with which we find ineffable affinity".
