Bundanon Trust

An artists´ retreat in the Australian bush.

Description of residency program
Bundanon is a unique organisation. Gifted to the Australian people in 1993 by artist Arthur Boyd, the Bundanon property is located on 1,100 hectares of bush and park land overlooking the Shoalhaven River, near Nowra on the NSW south coast. It was an audacious gift driven by a big vision: Boyd wanted Bundanon to be shared with artists and the public and for it to be a place for creative endeavour.

Our mission today is to operate as a centre for arts and education, to support the development of arts practice across all disciplines and to enable public access to the arts and the environment.

Central to our work is our Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program. Since 1997 we have hosted thousands of artists from all disciplines and from all over the world (over 34 countries). Bundanon is now an engine room for contemporary art practice in Australia - a place with outstanding facilities, dedicated to the making of contemporary work across all disciplines. Our capacity to house groups (up to 10 at Bundanon and 38 at Riversdale), the quality of our built infrastructure, the landscape setting and the professional support make it a highly sought after facility for established and emerging companies and artists.

Our Artist-in-Residence program is open to professional artists and thinkers from all disciplines, individually or in groups. We support new work, research and collaborations by Australian and international artists.

Bundanon is three hours' drive south of Sydney.

Duration of residency
Residencies are usually between one week and three months

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
We are open to all artistic disciplines. We can supply basic equipment (desks, easels etc) but artists need to bring their own specialised tools and resources.  All residences have high speed internet access.

Residents have their own private living and work spaces with attached ensuites.  In some residences, kitchens are shared. One of our residences is wheelchair accessible. There is more information here:

Each residence comes with its own workspace. There are also a large rehearsal studio suitable for dance, a silversmithing studio, a printing press and a baby grand piano.

Fees and support
The Artist-in-Residence program at Bundanon Trust is made possible through the financial support of public funding and individual donors. However this funding does not cover the full cost of the program.

This is a standard accommodation fee for Bundanon residencies of $50 per person per night, with a minimum stay of 7 nights.

Groups over ten people are accommodated at the Boyd Education Centre at Riversdale at the cost of $65 per person per night.

Bundanon does not offer stipends, living allowances or travel assistance. Catering is also residents' responsibility. We can recommend arrangements for group catering on request.

A number of applicants each year may be offered fellowships, which means we will waive the accommodation fee. We will make this decision based on applicants' ranking in the selection process outlined above, and our available resources.

However when applying for a residency, you should make your application on the assumption that you will need to pay the accommodation fee.

Expectations towards the artist
Artists may be asked once in their residency to open their studio for a half-hour discussion with local school children. This is voluntary.
