2018 NPAF OCTOBER Chaco Culture National Historical Park Arts Residency

Two One-Month Residencies in APRIL & OCTOBER to live and work in the Legendary Chaco Complex.

Description of residency program
WORK IN THE LEGENDARY CHACO COMPLEX, comprising eleven beautifully preserved pueblos or ceremonial structures, Chaco Canyon is the premier site to experience the amazing and mysterious Chacoan culture. This beautiful and isolated complex is the historical trace of the sacred ancestral culture to many of the existing pueblos of the Southwest. The park is also a Dark Skies certified location, one of the most ideal places for astronomy, astrophotography and other Night Sky artistic practice.

Description of Residency Location
Located in San Juan County, New Mexico, USA. Founded as an Antiquities Monument in 1907, the park was operated for most of the 20th century as a anthropological storehouse of knowledge and evidence of the Chacoan Culture. The Monument expanded to its present boundaries and park designation in 1980. It received its’ UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 1987. The park is located in the open plains of Northwestern New Mexico, sharing borders with the Navajo Nation and BLM land. It is approximately one and a half hours from the closest city, Farmington, and two hours and forty minutes from Albuquerque. A vehicle with four wheel drive/offroad capacity is hightly recommended as not every road in the area is paved.

April Artist in Residence Term: April 1st - April 30th, 2018
October Artist in Residence Term: October 1st - October 30th, 2018

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Open to all types of artists in All-media. Because of Chaco Culture NHP’s Dark Skies Designation, the October Residency is highly desirable to Night and Astrophotography and filmmaking.

In-Park residency in small but comfortable NPS housing. 

Studio/ workspace
a large YURT STUDIO that may be used by the Artist in Residence if there is no prior conflicting event scheduled for it. The artist in residence will be granted this shared multi-use studio space.

Fees and support
Currently there is no stipend for this residency. 

Expectations towards the artist
The artist must tread lightly, & follow all the park regulations and antiquities codes. This is a historic site that is sacred to a variety of tribal peoples of the area. The artist will make at least one public talk, presentation or concert. A venue will be provided for this/these event(s)
