Red Door Arts - The Other Studio: Call for EOIs 2018 residencies

Peace and quiet to work on a project - solitary or collaborative.

Description of residency program
Red Door Arts is calling for Expressions of Interest for 2018 residences at The Other Studio in the hinterland of South-East Queensland.

The residence is a large self contained house in the middle of a small farm (we live in the other house on the farm, so don’t worry - you won’t be alone or isolated!). The residence would suit an individual or couple that need peace and solitude to work on a project, or a small group of up to six or seven people needing time away from day to day distractions to collaborate on an artistic project.

Duration of residency
Artist residences are offered for periods of 2 weeks minimum to 3 months maximum. The application process is competitive and artists need to submit their applications by the end of December 2017 for residences in the period April 2018 to March 2019. There are still a few discounted non-competitive residency periods available for the period January 2018 to March 2018.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
The studio is ideal for most art forms - 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional visual art, performance workshopping, writing, music, digital art, etc. The studio space is integrated into the accommodation area. There is a huge 10m x 4m indoor workspace, an outdoor undercover workplace, a soundproof roomand has a range of artistic equipment available - although you may need to buy or bring with you specialised materials or equipment, and of course you will need to bring your own instruments and technical equipment. The residence is close to suppliers of artistic and musical equipment. There are also printmaking facilities available at the main studio.

Accommodation and studio/ workspace
The residence is self contained and is fully furnished and equipped with four seperate sleeping rooms, a full kitchen, and bathroom and laundry attached to the studio space. It has wonderful views of the Glasshouse Mountains, and there are pleasant rainforest walks along the Stanley River.

The Other Studio is a few minutes from the little village of Peachester, 20km from Beerwah - the local commercial centre, and just over an hour from Brisbane. It is locally centred to the alternative arts hub of Maleny and the tableland, and is close to the coastal town of Caloundra on the Pacific Ocean.

Peachester is in the subtropics, but has an elevation of 200-300m, effectively ameliorating the climate. Winter maxima are around 20 C and minima are about 9 C - although it can get frosty enough to light the fire! Winter is our dry season, with only 60mm of rain per month, and an average of six rain days a month. Average summer maximum temperatures are around 28 C and minima about 18 C, although from time to time it can get quite hot. Summer is our wet season with average rainfall of around 300mm and 12 rainy days in a month.

Fees and support
Artists must pay a fee for accommodation - a schedule of fees is available. This fee covers accomodation costs, electricity, gas, heating/cooling, internet, and pickup and drop off at airport/bus stop/ train station if required. All bed and bath linen is provided, and the kitchen is fully equipped. Artists need to pay for their food and arts materials. No financial support is available through Red Door Arts, although we may be able to assist artists to prepare applications for grants.

Expectations of the artist
Although not compulsory, artists are encouraged to interact with the local artistic community by conducting workshops, giving artist talks, holding an exhibition or giving a performance, or collaborating with or mentoring local artists.
