2018 StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program

StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program call for applications for 2018.

Description of residency program
The StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program at the Tides Institute & Museum of Art (TIMA) offers residency opportunities to visual artists from the U.S. and abroad to deepen and develop their practice within a community setting. The StudioWorks program mission, supported by two national awards from ARTPLACE, is to place the arts in the center of the community, utilizing the arts and artists to foster, engage, and create a vital and vibrant downtown. A StudioWorks residency provides an artist with a unique experience to play an active role in our creative community through socially engaged projects, educational outreach or public programming.

Duration of residency
Residencies vary from 2-weeks to 8-weeks, though most artists come for 4-week terms.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Artists are welcome to work in any media or multi-media and have access to basic tools and shop equipment (jigsaw, circular saw, drills, etc.) as well as use our printmaking and letterpress studio. Studios are outfitted with work tables, lamps, chairs and stools.

Accommodation
Housing is provided to artists-in-residence. Housing assignments vary from a private apartment to a private bed/private bath in a house shared with other artists.

Studio/ workspace
Our studios, museum and housing are located within the historic downtown and working waterfront of Eastport, Maine and overlook the U.S./Canada boundary. TIMA’s downtown StudioWorks building contains private studios, common work areas, and a ground floor printmaking and letterpress studio. TIMA is also developing a nearby larger scale North Church Project Space which provides additional studio workspace and exhibition opportunities.
All artists are assigned private workspaces in studio facilities. The StudioWorks building also has a shared kitchen, laundry and common area.
By the end of 2017, 32 artists from 12 different U.S. states and three foreign countries will have participated in the program.

Fees and support
Stipends are paid to artists on a pro-rated basis. For a 4-week term, the stipend is $2,000 US.

Expectations towards the artist
A StudioWorks residency provides an artist with a unique experience to play an active role in our creative community through socially engaged projects, educational outreach or public programming. Some kind of community involvement is a requirement of our program.

Application information
The deadline to complete an application to StudioWorks is February 1, 2018. Applications are reviewed by a jury panel and decisions are generally announced 4-6 weeks following the deadline, on or about March 15, 2018.
