Summer Residencies in Tuscany

Spectacular landscape, a rich artistic heritage and companionship while you develop your work.

The residency is in a peaceful hamlet in an area of outstanding beauty, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. It is 5 kms from the nearest small town, Greve in Chianti, 30 kms to Florence and roughly the same to Siena. Buses run from Greve to Florence and from Tavarnelle to Siena.

Artists are encouraged to come and develop their own work in periods of two, three or four weeks. There is no program as such and no teaching and artists are expected to follow their own timetables with the aim of developing their own work.

The residency has a collective philosophy and everyone is expected to contribute to the life of the house and studio. We take it in turns to cook for each other in the evenings and share domestic chores such as shopping and generally taking care of the house and studio. Someone also comes to clean the house and change linen once a week.

Artists also contribute informally: this might be in the form of demonstrating a favourite technique, presenting one’s work or participating in one of the exhibitions that we put on from time to time. However there is no specific requirement for any of these activities. The owner makes occasional trips to places of mutual interest. She also drives to the local town for shopping and when artists want to make a trip to Florence or Siena.

The studio is in the deconsecrated church attached to the house so that it is possible to work whenever you want to. It is very large and is well equipped with easels, tables, chairs, a small press, bowls, oils, turps, glue, tape etc as well as tools such as hammers, chisels etc and paper. Artists are expected to bring their own paints and brushes. Extra items can be bought in the art shop in Florence or sometimes in the local shops.

The house is spacious and very comfortable. There is space for three artists at any one time and the fourth place is taken by the owner who works alongside everyone else. There are three bathrooms which allows one person to have a bathroom to themselves while two people share. There are two living room areas and a well equipped kitchen. We generally eat on the large terrace during the summer and there are several other outside spaces where it is possible to work.

The fees are 220 euros per week and there is a reduction of 100 euros if artists stay for four weeks. Applications should be made by email giving a brief description of your experience and and you will need to send examples of your work. Applications are invited from writers as well as visual artists.
