Artists in Paris | International Artist-in-Residence Program - Autumn 2018

Join your international counterparts on an artistic adventure in the City of Lights!

Following on from a successful year of running “Atelier sur Seine” artist residency in the French countryside, we are excited to be able to offer an international group residency in the heart of the artistic centre of Paris, Montparnasse.

The vision for the Paris program is to foster cultural exchange between artists from different countries while hosting them in the art capital of the world.

Residency Overview
This residency will not only give you the opportunity to explore Paris and have space to comfortably stay and work in, but will also give you an insider’s view into the important role that international artists like you have played in Paris from the late 19th century to the present day.  As part of the residency, you, together with fellow resident artists, will visit historic artists studios, many of which are normally closed to the public, as well as the art academies, cafés and meeting places where the ideas that shaped modern art as we know it were formed. During the residency you will have the opportunity to meet contemporary artists, curators and gallerists working in Paris today. This residency will also include a day trip to Barbizon, the renowned artist village and its nearby Fontainebleau forest, known for its unique light that served as a muse to many artists.

L'AiR Arts Residency Program in Paris includes:

  • Accommodation in either private or shared room (based on your preferences)
  • Half-board meals: buffet breakfast and either lunch or dinner of fine french cuisine (including to-go option)
  • Welcoming dinner at a historic restaurant famous for its artists’ gatherings
  • Closing dinner / reception
  • Shared studio use and open studio event
  • Cultural Program and other activities together

Cultural Program

  • Historical artist studio tours
  • Current artist studio / residency visits and meetings with local artists
  • Gallery visits and discussions with gallery owners/curators
  • Visits to artist collectives and arts service organizations
  • Tours / walks  of different artistic neighbourhoods of Paris: Montparnasse, Montmartre, Marais, Belleville
  • A day trip to Barbizon, and hike in Fontainebleau forest
  • Paris Museum Pass (2 days)

Although we offer such a rich cultural programming, we will make sure that there is a good balance between organized events and independent exploration of Paris. Like many artists visiting Paris from around the world, you are invited to find inspiration in the city's cafes, alleyways, and bars. There will be time for artists to self-organize into small groups and explore Paris as per their interests.

To enhance the group residency experience and cultural exchange, we encourage artists to share their knowledge and expertise with other group participants.  As the residency is open to art historians/curators along with practising artists, we invite them to act as “guest contributors” to our programming.

Do not forget that the residency also includes a two-day PARIS MUSEUM PASS, where you gain free entry, without long queuing to over 50 museums and monuments in and around Paris!

Residency conditions and expectations

  • Open to professional visual artists of all mediums, as well as curators and art historians
  • Some level of English is required to be able to understand and interact with others

We will be offering this residency on an ongoing basis, with the launch session in October 2018.
