Textílsetur Winter Residency

Textílsetur Íslands calls for artists interested in a winter residency including a spinning workshop

Description of residency program
Textílsetur Íslands / The Icelandic Textile Center calls for artists interested in a winter residency. The winter months used to be the time of storytelling and wool working in Iceland. In November and December, the short days bring a very beautiful light and atmosphere that lends itself to textile explorations. This self-directed program offers artists space, time, and the possibility to experience the art of hand spinning yarn. A two-day beginner's spinning workshop is included in the residency fee and will be held twice, once each month. We will explore carding, spinning single and multi-ply yarns. We will listen to stories, talk about the characteristics of Icelandic sheep and wool processing, and visit the local wool washery. No previous spinning experience required.

Duration of residency
The winter residency is offered from November – December 2018, with a two-day workshop held each month (you may participate in a second workshop and build on your knowledge if you are staying longer than one month).

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
We encourage applications from artists who work with both traditional and contemporary forms of textile and fiber arts, or whose artistic practices are intrinsically linked to the use of textiles, including performance, costume/theater, installation, wearable art and fashion.

Workshops are led by Jóhanna Pálmadóttir, sheep farmer and teacher of handspinning, embroidery and knitting for nearly 30 years. Spinning wheels will be provided and all materials and equipment are included.

Accommodation and studio/workspace
The residency is based in “Kvennaskólinn”, the former Women’s College of Blönduós, and as such has private rooms with shared living and open plan shared studios, a loom weaving loft, and a small gallery attached to the dye studio, called “Bílskúrs Gallerí”.

Expectations towards the artist
Artists are asked to give a talk at the beginning of the stay to introduce themselves and their work to the other artists in residence. Artists organize an exhibition at the end of each month in Bílskúrs Gallerí.
