New Newfoundland Residency Opportunity

Pitched on the extreme edge of Newfoundland, Canada’s east coast, Grates Cove Studios is a unique destination for artists from around the world. The facility, located two hours from the capital of St. John’s, operates a year-round artist residency, offering accommodations, locally inspired cuisine, professional studio space, art tools and equipment, and extensive support services, such as proposal writing and project design consultation.

Grates Cove Studios welcomes writers, visual and performing artists from around the world to apply for a residency between two weeks and three plus months.

Studio Information

The Grates Cove Studios’ building is a 3600 square foot building with ten foot ceilings that was once the K-11 school house for Grates Cove. The entire top floor of the old school building (1800 square feet) is dedicated studio space for artists. The top floor is divided into two large rooms approximately 700 square feet each. These spaces are ideal for visual and performing artists. Off of each of these large open spaces are smaller rooms with a view of the ocean and are suitable for writers or those doing work on a computer or the like. Please communicate with Terrence and Courtney prior to your arrival about your project goals so that they can help to prepare your space before you arrive.

Grates Cove Studios has a fully equipped woodworking studio, photography equipment and other miscellaneous equipment available.  Artist Terrence Howell is onsite at all times.  He is available to help support artists.  Terrence is also available for project consultation/collaboration.  Other services available are grant writing/proposal preparation services, travel pick-up services from points within Newfoundland and meal preparation.

Accommodation Information

Artists share a three bedroom one bath home that is within walking distance to the main Grates Cove Studios building. Each artist has their own bedroom and shares the common areas. The house is fully furnished and has a washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchen, wi-fi and tv in the common living area with netflix capabilities. There is a patio off the main entrance to the house as well as a fair sized back yard where artists can meditate, bar-b-que, write, etc.
