SÍM Residency is open for applications!

Description of residency program
The SÍM Residency is an international residency located in Reykjavík and run by SÍM, The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists. During each month artists are offered to participate in a small artist talk and a group exhibition at the SIM Gallery, participation is not obligatory.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
At the SÍM Residency all media of visual arts are accepted:

  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Drawing
  • Photography
  • Installation
  • Ceramics 
  • Textile art
  • Performance
  • Sound art

All expenses are paid by the artists. The artist pays a residency fee for the stay at SÍM as well as his own travel expenses and all other personal living expenses during the residency.

Accommodation and Studio/ workspace
SÍM Residency both has a downtown location and will have renovated the artists apartment there by January 2019 on the second floor of the building, and a residency located in an old dairy farm in the outskrits of Reykjavík. Both buildings are also studio buildings for Icelandic artists. The main objective of the SIM Residency is to function as a direct link between visual artists, both nationally and internationally by bringing them together from different parts of the world to work in close company with each other.

Application information
There are two deadlines for the residency each year, the next application deadline is 31st of January for the period of July - December 2019. Artists can apply through the SÍM website by going to this link: https://sim.is/seljavegur-residency/ There they fill out an application form and then they send further information to the email application@sim.is 

The further information required are:

  • Short project description (max 400 words)
  • Resumé/CV
  • 3 – 5 photos of work in JPEG format (preferable size 300-500 KB)

Once an application is submitted a panel of professional SÍM artists review the application shortly after the deadline. Applicants are notified of the committee´s decisions within 6-7 weeks of the deadline.
Note that a granted residency is from the second to the last day of the relevant month. Applicants can apply for a maximum of 3 months residency. Information on residency locations and fees can be found on our website. https://sim.is/seljavegur-residency/ 

Expectations towards the artist
Requirements for applying are the following:
The Sím Residency is a project based residency and a good description of a proposed project is required.
Qualifying applicants must have a BA degree in fine arts or similar qualifications.
