Villa Sträuli

Inspiring residency all disciplines in beautiful Villa near Zurich (Switzerland).

Villa Sträuli offers a superior Artist in Residency Program in Switzerland. Apply now for a 3 months residency in 2020 and/or Spring 2021!
The aim of the Villa Sträuli stipend-supported residencies is to provide artists from all fields an opportunity to work creatively and make new contacts in a stimulating environment. The residencies are designed to support international artists and to promote intercultural exchange. Artists whose main place of residence is Switzerland cannot be awarded. Villa Sträuli is located in Winterthur, a small town about 15 minutes from Zurich by train.

Accommodation & Studios
The Sulzberg Foundation provides three live-in studios for creative artists in the Villa Sträuli. We offer 6 residencies a year, three months each. One of them will be awarded to an artist from abroad with a project that relates to the residency location (the city of Winterthur). The city of Winterthur is providing support for this residency and shall join the selection committee for the awarding of this studio. Each of the Villa Sträuli’s three studios is an independent flat with a living/working space, a small kitchen, a bedroom (doublebed), and a shower/WC. Layouts and furnishings vary in the studios.

Disciplines, work equipment, assistance and expectations
Artists based outside Switzerland, of any age or national origin, and working in any discipline (visual arts, literature, new media, film, music, performing arts), as well as scholars and educators associated with the arts (e.g. curators, museum educators) are welcome to apply.

For reasons of space, the studios are not suited for sculpture or for painters working with very big formats. For musicians we offer an almost soundproof studio with piano. We offer some assistance in connecting the artists to the local scene. Each artist has to bring or buy his own working equipment. As the salons on the ground floor are used for the Villa’s own cultural events and by the bistro and can also be hired out for private functions, there are often non-resident guests in the building.

The Villa Sträuli was built at the beginning of the last century and noise travels easily in the building; artists-in-residence will be able to hear sounds from the other studios. Given these circumstances, our residencies are not suited for artists who require a very quiet environment. It is important for us to understand applicants’ reasons for choosing this residency location. The explanation “I am seeking a break from my daily routine” is not enough. Each artist has to be willing to present his/her work during a “Meet the Artist” evening. It could be an exhibition, a concert, a performance, a talk…

Free housing, a monthly grant of CHF 1000 (single person), CHF 1’500 (artist couple) and a limited production money of CHF 500.-.

Duration of residency
The period of each residency is three months (January 15 until April 15; May 2 until July 31; September 1 until November 30, 2020 and January 15 until April 15, 2021).
