There is Beauty in this Journey is a new artistic programme produced by D6.

There is Beauty in this Journey is a new artistic programme produced by D6, that seeks to redress the sensationalism and bias around migration stories, aspiring towards a shared, rich and responsive exploration of our city and beyond. From 2019, our programme aims to reclaim the positive and too often concealed narratives around migration, diversity and cultural heritage. These are narratives and experiences are inextricably connected and complex but increasingly used to divide neighbours, communities and regions. D6 aim to draw out both the known and unknown historical and contemporary constructs that lead to misrepresentation and misinformation.
Through a high-quality programme of artist-led engagement within our city and internationally, D6 will support the research and development of ideas, collaboration and participation. There is Beauty in this Journey will serve as a platform for new processes, practice and partnerships to grow in times of extraordinary political change and transition.
D6 Research Residencies - Brief
We are inviting artists based in the North East of England (Tyne & Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and Teesside) to apply for a four-week research residency at D6. There are two residency opportunities available:

Dates for opportunity 1 March - April 2019
Dates for opportunity 2 May - July 2019 (to encompass Refugee Week 17th-23rd June)
We are seeking to support artists in our region with an international dimension to their practice. We will provide regional artists with the space and time to research a new project or idea without the constraints of having to necessarily produce a body of work; the emphasis for this residency is on research, not on finished artworks.
We are interested in taking forward the ideas and projects developed to form part of our future programme where possible. All artists will have access to the D6 studio in Newcastle City Centre, equipment and critical support.

Please note this is a non-residential residency programme.

Selected artists will be expected to:

  • Be based at the D6 studio outside of external meetings and research engagements
  • Feedback research to the D6 team on a weekly basis
  • Present their work as part of an artist talk event in the region
  • Present the results of their research as an interactive digital story through Mural (, our digital platform, working with our Associate Digital Curator
  • Through the research, develop a proposal for future work
  • Write a short report upon completion of the residency to feedback on their experience

There is a fee for the successful artist/collective of £2,500 for a minimum four-week residency (consecutive and non-consecutive weeks are both acceptable). Artists may apply individually or as part of a group (however the award per residency will not change).
Selection criteria:
