2019 Fall Residency at The Lemon Tree House, Tuscany

Two week residency in a private medieval hamlet in Tuscany, Italy.

Description of residency program
The Lemon Tree House is an artist residency program designed to encourage the creative, intellectual and personal growth of emerging and established artists, musicians and writers in beautiful Tuscany. The aim is to support creative process in the unique and historically rich environment, to allowed devoted time, dialogue and space for creative work, and to provide interesting opportunities for cultural exchange and development.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Writers and artists have the best of both worlds- the freedom to work in peace during the day, with the option to meet up with the group for cocktails, dinner and craft talks with the featured Artists and Writers-in-Residence in the evening. Located in a tranquil hamlet in the Cetona foothills, residents have access to the full grounds, as well as a workspace in their private rooms and raw studio spaces in the hamlet for visual artists who cannot work in their rooms or outdoors.

Whether you need that quiet time to complete a project, hope to launch a new idea, or just a quiet, beautiful space to get away and focus, The Lemon Tree House Residency is a perfect way to explore the creative process.

Duration of residency
Two full weeks of isolated artistic time with the benefit of one-on-one sessions with in-house instructors and international authors & artists, conversational exchange with fellow attendees, nightly cocktail hour and three course dinners nightly prepared by an in-house chef.  At The Lemon Tree House there is plenty of solitude in which to work, with the benefits of like-minded company in what we know can sometimes be a rather isolating pursuit. Past guest lecturers include Giller-nominated Sarah Selecky, Italian author Pietro Grossi, painters Sarah Cale, Ryley O'Byrne and Christian Gosselin, writer and Granta creative director Michael Salu, New York Times best seller Ibi Kaslik, prize-winning writer Rosa Rankin-Gee, writer and comic artist Nadja Spiegelman, award-winning author Pasha Malla, award-winning poet and editor of the Southwest Review Greg Brownderville, journalist & author Cheryl Lu Lien Tan and the 2018 winner of the Dayton Peace Prize, author Hala Alyan. Our fall 2019 residency is proud to welcome Pulitzer Prize nominee and award-winning poet Garrett Hongo, award-winning non-fiction writer Jennie Lee, winner of the 2018 N8 Award for Best Program at Amsterdam's Museumnacht: artist & curator Merel Noorlander and award-winning watercolorist and plein air painter Jane Barnard.

Studio/ workspace
The Lemon Tree House tries to supply all of its residents with space (in their rooms) to work.  However, the estate is full of corners - both indoors and outdoors - where writers are free to work.  We cannot provide all visual artists with large private studios for work, but we do our best to facilitate appropriate spaces when possible and we have two raw studio spaces in the hamlet that are available for our artists to use. Please email us ahead of time about specific studio requirements, material needs and expectations and we will do our best to accommodate. Writers are not offered separate work spaces, but can make use of the buildings, common spaces and grounds as desired.

Fees and support
The cost of the residency program is 2600€/pp. We offer work exchange positions to 1 or 2 residents for each session which can help residents cover the cost of half of their residency fees (1300€). These residents have a regular work schedule during the residency and The Lemon Tree House tries to leave the residents free during any/all group gatherings, talks, meals, readings, exhibitions, etc. so that no work exchange resident misses out on any important learning opportunities or exchanges during their stay. Residents who are interested in applying for one of our work exchange programs are asked to send us the usual application as well as a letter of intent by e-mail to: with 'work exchange applicant' in the subject line.

Of particular interest are these skills: drafting contracts, advertising & marketing, social media, photography and videography, drone photography & videography, admin & data input, newsletter design, basic knowledge of Mailchimp and Hootsuite appreciated but not required.

Expectations towards the artist
Artists and writers are under no obligation to participate in any of the group activities at The Lemon Tree House. We respect that each writer and artist has their own way of working and producing work in a way that feels natural to them. We encourage residents to share their writing and artwork if they feel comfortable doing so and most residents enjoy exchanging with their fellow participants. We offer one-to-one sessions with our artists in residence but once again, nothing at The Lemon Tree House is obligatory: you can attend the talks or not. Come to dinner or not. Sign up to read your work or stay home while the group dinners are taking place. Residents should set their own rhythms according to what works best for them and fuels their creativity most.
