One Off Makery residencies

An invitation to artists and makers to spend 1 to 3 weeks in the forested mountains of rural NSW.

Description of residency program
One Off Makery is located in the beautiful Pappinbarra Valley, in the forested hills of NSW Australia.

Duration of residency
Artists, makers, writers, musicians, performers and scientists are invited to stay for a period of between 1 and 3 weeks, with their own cabin and access to shared space.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Depending on your practice, you may like to work in your cabin, or share the main shed space which is a functioning puppetmaking workshop. There is an outside workshop for dusty and noisy processes, and a 7m x 7m inside workshop with a 6m high roof for the quieter cleaner stuff. There are tools such as a drill press, band saw, drop saw, welder, anvil and sewing machines but we encourage you to bring your own hand tools and materials.

Children are welcome, because we know how hard it can be to find residencies when you’re a parent!

There are two self-contained cabins and a large workshop, which operates as a construction space for puppets and performance objects for most of the year.

Applicants can choose from either:

a) The Kevin, a big converted caravan with double and single bed, wood stove, kitchen, shared toilet, tiny shower and large verandah, or
b) The Crate, a single-room converted shipping container with double bed, kitchen, verandah, outdoor shower/bath and long drop toilet.

Fees and support

A small fee of $25 to $30 per night helps to cover maintenance costs. Project collaborators are welcome to apply for both cabins at once, or we can schedule two simultaneous residencies for creative exchange.

Expectations towards the artist
We can help residents to source materials and get in touch with local schools and communities for any projects or showings, and will arrange transport to and from airports/train stations and towns for shopping trips etc. Some meals may be shared but cooking facilities are provided in the cabins so residents can make their own meals.

Application information
Applicants should outline what they intend to work on but there is no expectation of an outcome. To apply, send an email to and include a brief description of:

  • Yourself and your practice, with up to 3 images or links
  • The project you intend to work on
  • What space and facilities you require
  • Which accommodation you’d prefer
  • How many people including ages of children
  • Preferred dates
  • Travel needs

Successful applicants will need to pay their contribution by direct deposit before arrival.
