Analog Extreme: desert trek in Mauritania

Digital detox for artists - in one of the most beautiful areas in the Sahara.

Description of residency programme
The Extreme Analog programme is a ”digital detox” programme for artists.

In an age where online activities overshadow many other forms of human experience and interaction, you may have felt the need for occasional digital disconnection and for establishing a more direct, physical relationship with your environment. If travel is something else than chasing material for rapid digital interaction, will it change our experiences and our creative processes?

This programme was first offered in early 2019. It is open to artists and creatives of all disciplines. Participation is limited to 10 people. It is arranged in collaboration with an experienced local tour operator.

The programme takes the form of a 10-day tour, including a 6-day desert trek in the Adrar, one of the most beautiful areas in the Sahara. It is run by the Waaw residence in Saint-Louis, on the border between Senegal and Mauritania.

Duration of residency
The duration of this residency is 10 days; from 1 to 10 January 2020.
You can book a flight to either Nouakchott or Dakar. In the latter case, you add a few days to your tour in order to see the Senegalese cities of Saint-Louis and Dakar.

Disciplines supported and technical information
Visual art in all its forms – but we recommend the programme for practitioners of sound art, dance, design, architecture and writing. The emphasis is on collecting impressions, and there will be fairly little time for actual creation. Bring any materials and tools yourself. Traveling light is essential.

During the trek, accommodation is arranged in simple individual tents or traditional Mauritanian tents for 2-5 people. In Nouakchott, we have booked simple hotel accommodation. Please be prepared to share.
