Twelve Windows

Twelve different perspectives to inspire new work.

The Pfaelzer Hof is again inviting applications from writers, sound artists and visual artists to creatively reflect on and interpret the perspectives from the windows at the Pfaelzer Hof, Germany. The building is unusual in its floor plan which is trapezoid in shape, which means there are perspectives from its many windows in every direction, making it a metaphor for plurality.

The third floor apartment (the Atelier), where the selected artist or writer will reside and work, has 'twelve windows' which encompass views of the urban environment, railway viaduct, hillside church, historic castle, surrounding hills, natural woodland and dramatic skyscapes and soundscapes.

This apartment affords the best views of the surrounding urban and natural landscapes and artists are invited to enjoy these perspectives and be inspired to create new work.

Recently US artist Joanna Tam created a series of photos and video works in response to our original Twelve Windows call. Joanna is coming back this summer 2019 to exhibit her work with us and another local gallery. We have also recently showed Stuart Young's window-inspired translucent paintings in Idar-Oberstein Library.

This residency includes single occupancy of spectacular artist flat and separate, secluded painting studio; curator's support; one-week exhibition, and regional press and publicity. The residency fee for up to four weeks is € 2,240.

Duration of residency
Four weeks or longer

Expectations towards the artist
Staying in our Atelier apartment you will study, meditate and reflect on the twelve different vistas, asking questions in your own medium as to what it is that you see, perceive and interpret. We are keen to host artists who will take this opportunity and use the support on offer to create a new body of work. We like to share in your ideas and thoughts from the beginning and help you to develop exciting new work towards an exhibition. This may be work in progress that you can take away with you and develop further at home. We believe in the creative process and this is an opportunity that is extremely well supported.
