Tropic 08´N - An artist-led expedition into one of the richest biomes on earth with indigenous culture & ecology.

Reconnect to nature, learn from indigenous knowledge and explore pressing issues of our time.

Description of Residency Program
Tropic 08°N presents a rare opportunity to research and develop new artistic & creative practices in a remote natural environment between rainforest and sea, in collaboration with an autonomous, indigenous group at the gateway between South and Central America. Respect for community and nature remains at the heart of this place and culture despite increased connections to the globalized world.

Our fluid, site-responsive programs introduce creatives to the local ecology and culture as well as the socio-political and historical contexts of the area, whilst presenting reciprocal benefits for local communities both socially + economically through our presence and exchange.

In our fifth year of operation, we cultivate spaces that nourish and encourage space for personal and professional growth, the freedom to learn and experiment creatively, gather and find new inspiration in the remote wilderness far from structural or institutional frameworks and limitations.

Though this program we engage with new ecological and cultural perspectives of our time in a multitude of ways, as well as promoting necessary dialogues and understanding between remote areas of this planet to others worldwide.

Duration of Program
Our program is designed for participation for either 3 or 6 week periods on the following dates:

April 23 - May 14, 2019
May 16 - June 6, 2019

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
This is a multi-disciplinary program open to artists along with other creative practitioners, musicians, writers, curators, activists and scientists.

Participants are encouraged to be resourceful and work with local methods, materials, basic tools and equipment within the community and isolated natural environment.

Participants will live together in a shared house constructed with methods and materials near the ocean and river, in the heart of an indigenous village.

Rooms will be shared between 2-3 (private rooms may also be available on request prior to arrival) bedding and mosquito nets will be provided.

Participants will be encouraged to use the outdoor, diverse environment as their studio and daily interactions with the local community and ecology as their source of learning and inspiration. Artists will have access to communal workspace and solar power to charge equipment.

Artists will be able to work more independently on their self directed practice alongside our program. We expect artists to come with an open and willing attitude, to assist in the responsibilities of the resident community and be respectful towards the local nature and local indigenous communities wishes. We will be making exhibitions and publications after a period of residencies, which artists will be invited to be involved in.
