YUI - PORT Artist in Residence | Invitation Program 2020 Spring

Residence facility that renovated a junior high school near the sea and the central city.

Purpose of the Project
The purpose of Artist-in-Residence project is to host and support artists etc. from domestic and overseas who conduct creative activities while residing at the Niigata City Center for Creative Arts and International Youth Exchange ( YUI - PORT ), to create an environment where creative-rich human resources can easily gather, to transmit the charm of Niigata City to domestic and overseas, to inspire regional pride and affection by rediscovering the attractions of nature, history and culture of this region through the interaction of citizens and artists etc.

Features of the Program
YUI - PORT is a refurbished former junior high school facility. It is near the central urban area of Niigata City and located in an environment facing the Sea of Japan and the pine forest. It is possible for artists etc. residing in the facility to conduct higher creative activities while being inspired by Niigata City's natural, historical and cultural charm.
Artist etc. residing in the facility will open their creative process to the public and through workshops and research, it is possible to nurture relationships with citizens and youth and lead to diverse creative developments. Also, by artists etc. residing at the same time period interacting with each other, it leads to create new area by fusing different kind of fields.

Duration of Stay
Within 90 days between April 1, 2020 (Wednesday) to June 30, 2020 (Tuesday)

August 1, 2019 (Thursday) - September 30, 2019 (Monday) [No Later Than] (Postmark on deadline date is not acceptable.)

Qualifications
・ Currently active artist (genre does not matter).
・ Participate in the citizen exchange project at least once in cooperation with Designated Administrator.
・ Reside and conduct creative activities in YUI - PORT.
・ Able to communicate in either Japanese or English.
・ In good health condition.

Details of Invitation
YUI - PORT and artist will carry out the program by agreeing on a contract, which include the following conditions.
Entries by multiple people such as groups are also possible, but in that case, the support content will be for 1 person (1 room).
※ In principle, accompanying families and production assistants etc. are not accepted.

  • Production Cost : YUI - PORT will pay 200,000 yen as a production cost (material purchase cost, research expenses etc.) during residence.
  • Details Of Activity : Artist will conduct creative activities and research activities during residence, and it is essential to participate in the citizen exchange project at least once.
  • Equipment etc. : YUI - PORT will lend YUI - PORT's tools and furniture for free of charge during the program period.
  • Location Of Production : YUI- PORT will lend YUI – PORT's “Workshop Gallery (1 or 2)” for free of charge during the program period. However, in principle, there will be a charge for using other toll areas.
    In principle, artist will do the cleaning. Also, after the completion of the production activity during the program period, artist must return the used equipment and supplies to the designated administrator in the original state.
  • Citizen Exchange Project : It is necessary for artist to participate in the citizen exchange project at least once in cooperation with Designated Administrator. YUI - PORT will support expenses of material etc. necessary for citizen exchange project.
  • The Work After The End of Residence : Artist must remove the work etc. by themselves after the end of the production activity. When bringing back the work, packing should be done by artist themselves. Transportation expenses shall be borne by the artist.
  • Residing Expenses : YUI - PORT will pay 2,800 yen per day as a residing expense during the residence. (However, the maximum limit will be 89 nights and 90 days). However, expense will not be paid for days residing outside Niigata City for personal reasons such as traveling etc. The matter is the same in case of delay of arrival or returning home early.
  • Living Expenses : YUI - PORT will bear the light, heat, and water expenses during residence.
  • Place to Stay : YUI - PORT will lend the "Artist Dormitory (1 or 2)" and attached equipments as a place to stay for free of charge only during the program period. Artist, in principle need to bring necessary goods (bedding, toiletries, other consumables) for residence. Although bedding goods are available for a fee, request must be submitted three days in advance.
  • Communication : Artist can access to the Internet with wireless LAN in the accessible area. In addition, as a toll service of the facility, rental laptop computer is available.
  • Insurance : Accident insurance, liability insurance, etc. are to be bought at the responsibility of the artist, YUI - PORT does not have responsibility for insurance coverage etc.
  • Transportation Expense : YUI - PORT will pay the round-trip public transportation expense from the airport (or train station) nearest to the residence of the invited artist to YUI - PORT in the range of the maximum limit amount.
    ※ The actual expense equivalent to the most reasonable and efficient travel section using public transportation is to be covered. Round-trip expense up to 1 time during the program period is to be covered and transportation expenses after 2ndtime shall be borne by the expense of self-cost.
    ※ Payment will be made after the arrival of artist etc. in Niigata (settlement payment in case of overseas).
    ※ The maximum amount will be 100,000 yen in Japan and 200,000 yen in foreign countries.
    ※ The expenses related to the transportation of goods will be borne at the expense of self-cost.
    ※Transportation costs exceeding the maximum limit amount will be borne by artist etc.
  • Support : YUI - PORT will provide the following support as needed.
                   ・ Provide information on how to acquire painting supplies and materials
                   ・Support for research activities
                   ・Recruitment of support volunteers
                   ・Introduce "Futaba Mécénat” which support Artist-in-Residence activities of artist (only for people who wish to request)
  • Record Of Activities : YUI - PORT will record works and activities of artist in the program in photographs or video. Artist etc. please cooperate for the above recording.
    The copyright of the work and the concept produced by this program belongs to the artist, however, YUI - PORT shall distribute or use photographs, videos etc. recorded by YUI - PORT for free of charge for purposes such as PR of residential type arts production/exhibition and citizen exchange project and publishing and recording activity records etc.
  • Create Activity Records : YUI - PORT will create activity records for recording this program.
  • Colletion of Income TaxIf you are invited from a country that has not concluded a tax treaty with Japan or that is subject to tax even though it has, approximately 20% of the income tax (As of 2019) will be collected from the amount of each payment of production expenses, living expenses and transportation expenses. For more information, contact your local embassy or other relevant agency.
  • VISA : If necessary, artist living abroad should obtain a passport and visa to enter Japan (at the expense of self-cost). For details, please contact the Japanese Embassy in your country.

In the case of E-mail, please enter in "AIR 2020 Spring Entry" in the subject line.
・Application form
・One photograph of your face taken within the last 6 months (Only the photograph of the representative is required, please attach the photograph to the application form)
・ Materials(Please submit in one of the following. Images and videos can not be combined together)
     1. 10 pieces of image data of your work (image file jpg, resolution 72 dpi, Maximum side length 1000pixel)
     2. In case of video and sound work, please properly attach the edited video/sound work (DVD, CD etc.). Otherwise upload a movie file summarizing the video of the work to a video distribution service such as Youtube, and then, attach the URL on your E-mail. The video file is limited to one file and the length shall be within 5 minutes.
※Incomplete application documents and work materials will be excluded from the selection.
※Please note that, in principle, the submitted application documents will not be returned.
※Handling of personal information: We will never use the submitted application documents for purposes other than the YUI – PORT project.

Selection and Result
The selection committee will conduct selection based on the materials submitted from the applicant. The selection result will be notified to all applicants by E-mail in early November 2019 (intended schedule). Questions regarding the selection are not accepted.
