MMCA International Artist Residency Program 2020
MMCA Residency, run by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), is now receiving applications for the International Artist Residency Program 2020. MMCA Residency Changdong, established in 2002, aims to provide a supportive environment for artists and foster creative exchanges between artists and various art professionals.

■ Application Period: Monday, 16 September - Friday, 27 September, 2019

* Application Deadline: 18:00 in Korean local time, Friday 27 September, 2019

■ Residency Venue: MMCA Residency Changdong

(257 Deongneung-ro, Dobong-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea)

■ Discipline: Visual Arts

■ Residency Period: Please choose one term only

- 1st term: 9 April - 18 June, 2020 (1 artist)

- 2nd term: 2 July - 10 September, 2020 (1 artist)

- 3rd term: 24 September - 3 December, 2020 (1 artist)

* Early move-in or late move-out not allowed.

■ Number of Artists: 1 artist for each term/3 artists in total

* If the jury does not find suitable candidates, MMCA Residency may not fulfill its plan to select the total number of artists.

■ Nationality: All regions around the world (except Korea)

■ Eligibilities

- No experience in MMCA residency programs (Changdong/Goyang)

- Fluent in English (mandatory)

* Only individual artist, not duo or team. Work partners, assistants, or family members are not allowed to stay at the residency. They will need to find separate accommodation.

* If you are based in the Netherlands, please consider applying for the Mondriaan Fund Fellowship Program 2020


■ Benefits

- Private studio with accommodation (free of charge)

- Monthly Grant: 1,000,000 KRW (approx. 830 USD) per month, total 3,000,000 KRW for the entire residency period

* The grant will be transferred directly to the participant's Korean local bank account every month and the total amount is subject to change based on one’s actual residency period.

- Access to the residency's facilities and resources


■ Responsibilities

- Round-trip airfare, meals, transportation, etc.

- Work materials

- Travel and medical insurance

* Selected artists should submit a copy of insurance certificate and their travel itinerary to MMCA Residency Changdong. Artists without insurance can be rejected.

- Participation in the programs, activities and events organized by MMCA Residency


■ Facilities: Private Studio (46~60㎡) with Accommodation (furnished with a single bed, table, wardrobe, and other basic furniture), Gallery Ⅰ(132㎡), Gallery Ⅱ(105㎡), Shared Toilet & Shower Room, Kitchen, Community Room, Outdoor Working Zone (191㎡) * Wireless Internet available.

- Submitted materials will be removed after the selection process.

- Online application system will be closed at 18:00 in Korean local time on Friday, 27 September, 2019. We request applicants to apply in advance to avoid any possible errors or problems caused by the overflowing number of applicants near the deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted under any circumstances.


■ Materials to Submit Online

1. Online Application Form

2. CV including the lists of the selected exhibitions, projects, residency, awards and education experiences (in .pdf format)

3. Portfolio:

- Up to 10 works with captions and brief description in the pdf format (.avi, or .mp4 format for video or sound work)

- For video or sound work, the duration of each file must not exceed 5min. Link to the website is not acceptable.

4. Artist statement with project plan including anticipated outcome of the residency program (in .pdf format)

5. One Letter of Recommendation (in .pdf format)

- Contact information of the referee (email, phone number) must be included.

- The letter must be signed by the referee.

* Please do NOT include special characters in any of the file names.


■ Selection and Notification Process

1. Review of all applications

2. Notification of the shortlist at the beginning of November 2019 (Selected applicants will be contacted individually)

3. Online interview (in English) with selected applicants on the shortlist in November 2019

4. Notification of the final selection in December 2019

* Final results will be posted on the MMCA website and the schedule is subject to change.
