Fundación Valparaiso

General information

Brief description of organisation

Fundación Valparaíso was established in 1989 by Paul Beckett, a Danish artist, and his wife Beatrice, who both have a long life knowledge of art and conservation patronage.

The retreat is situated on the edge of terraced almond, orange and olive groves, 150 meters above sea level, and enjoys a beautiful panoramic view, which includes the Mediterranean, the Sierra Cabrera and the white hilltop village of Mojácar. The retreat was formerly an olive oil mill house.

Rural roads and trails crisscross the surrounding valley, and the region is a hikers paradise. Cars, mopeds and bicycles can be rented on the beach about 4 kilometers from the retreat. There are local bus services. The famous monumental Andalucia cities Granada, Córdoba, Sevilla can be reached by bus, as well as Madrid and Barcelona.

Grants available

The Valparaíso Foundation offers, to artists from all over the world and from all branches of the arts (writers, painters, sculptors, musicians, visual artists, etc.), a quiet and peaceful retreat where they can concentrate on their art, free from distraction and the duties of daily life. Since 2016, due to financial restructuring, Valparaiso Foundation must charge, to all its residents, a minimum fee to cover living costs. However, thanks to institutional support and art patronage, 2 grants are provided each month, for 2 of the residents. Once the artist completes the application process and pays the full residence fees, the VF Board of trustees chaired by Beatrice Beckett will select 2 residents each month to be awarded with the Grants, reimbursing them their full fees payments. The selection criteria is based, only and exclusively, on artistic quality and professional excellence. The Foundation management will contact personally with the selected artists.
