INSTINC AIR

General information

Brief description of organisation

Established in 2004, INSTINC is an artist-run institution that promotes a new language of art. Following the tradition of painting, INSTINC has pushed the paradigm to realize a wide array of art forms, including but not limited to installation, performance and video art. One of INSTINC´s key mission is to encourage collaboration, cultural exchange and sharing of ideas in contemporary art with local as well as international artists.

Therefore in 2009, INSTINC´s international artist residency program is launched. Through exhibitions, art workshops, artists´ talks & collaborations, INSTINC aims to establish an exciting platform where artists and public can engage with contemporary art and critical discourses. To further promote the contemporary art scene in Singapore, in 2011, INSTINC spearheads its inaugural “Squares Invasion” Painting Competition in search of artists in the forefront of contemporary painting.

INSTINC seeks artists whose work is unique, demonstrates clear ideas and a fresh artistic approach, and is relevant to contemporary art today.

We are proud to be one of the pioneers of artist-in-residence program in Singapore. INSTINCAIR program was started in 2009 by Singaporean artist Shih Yun Yeo. Since inception, our program has been created for artists who appreciate the importance of a conducive studio for artistic production and a very comfortable, convenient space for living. We are an independent artist-run space, set up for artists to pursue their practice with a high level of support and flexibility.

INSTINCAIR program is an international laboratory for talented artists from all over the world. At INSTINC, we provide a unique framework for young artists with limited experience to bypass large-scale institutional residences and take on a space where they are able to engage in various experiments, foster dialogue, involve critical discussion, cultivate professional and personal connections and examine the potentials of contemporary artistic production.

INSTINC develops three different residencies program to cater to different needs of artists: IgniteAIR, InteractAIR and ImmerseAIR program. Singapore is fast becoming an art incubator; recently named as one of the world’s top 12 cities to watch for exciting contemporary art and internationally recognized for its dynamic, young, contemporary arts scene. One of the highlights of the local art scene is Gillman Barracks, a contemporary arts cluster in Singapore that is home to many top international art galleries and the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA).

The galleries feature diverse and ever-changing exhibitions from internationally acclaimed artists, of the region and around the world. Art Stage, which takes place annually in the first quarter of each year, is the flagship art fair of Southeast Asia, and is the major platform to discover and interact with contemporary art from Asia.
