BROTA Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

BROTA is created by the Argentine artist Patricia Miani. After living four years in France, where she created an international residency program for artists one hour from Paris, Patricia returns to her country to give life to this new program of artistic residencies.

Thanks to the generous contribution and support of Peluffo family, BROTA offers artists of all nationalities a wonderful and stylish house in the heart of Buenos Aires city, where they can work and live an experience of creation and production in an extraordinary urban environment, rich in cultural diversity, conforming it into a creative factory within the contemporary art practice.

BROTA launched its international artist-in-residency program in November 2018 by welcoming the French artist Didier Rousseau-Navarre, who developed his artistic project at the Botanical Garden of Buenos Aires city.

Brief description of residency program

BROTA invites artists from all over the world to create in dialogue with the cosmopolitan and dynamic city of Buenos Aires in Argentina. BROTA residency dedicates particular attention to projects exploring the interplay of nature and urban environment, within the Anthropocene the current geological epoch of extensive human modification of ecological and geological processes. The word combines the root "anthropo", meaning "human" with the root "-cene", the standard suffix for "epoch" in geologic time.

"BROTA" means -sprout- which is one of our residency objectives: see emerge, develop and thrive the artist’s work and projects that can be part of this unique and enriching experience. The selection of the artists will be based on the artistic quality of their work, their motivation and their potential to make the most of the opportunity offered by the residency.

Brota House hosts artists for one to three months residency period and accommodates up to 3 artists at the same time. The open call is all year round and English, Spanish and French language is spoken. This stylish house is located in the center of Barrio Parque, a residential area laid out in winding streets by the French landscape architect Carlos Thays (founder of the Botanical Garden of Buenos Aires) and surrounded by the MALBA (the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires) and the Paseo Alcorta shopping centre.

If there is a word that defines Argentina, it is diversity. The Argentine Republic is located in the extreme south of the American continent and its name refers to the richness of the soil (from the Latin, argentum, ´silver´). In the almost three million square kilometers of the territory we can find all types of climates and the most spectacular views. Many of them declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. To the diversity of the landscapes, the diversity of our people is added. Between 1880 and 1950, Argentina received five million inhabitants who bequeathed us the values of sacrifice, the importance of hard work and also taught us how to celebrate life. Taking this diversity as a motivation and promoting artistic concern, BROTA residency program aims to give artists a unique and enriching artistic experience, conforming it into a creative factory.

The collaboration we already have with the Botanical Garden of Buenos Aires city, is a very important vain of our artistic program. At the end of the residency period, a public presentation is organized to show the project realized by the artists. A press release is published to communicate the event, through local journalists and social media. BROTA residency will do its best to provide artists all the support and assistance needed to develop their projects. We also facilitates the development of the artist’s work enabling connections with the local art circuit, institutions and organizations that can contribute to each project.
