Atelier de la Rose

Residence experience at Atelier de la Rose in Montcabrier, France.

by Linda Newington

"When I first stayed at Atelier de la Rose in 2005 I made two series of paintings "In the Lot Valley" and "Garden at Villandry". They were an essential part of my first exhibition at Bettles Gallery, Ringwood that October.
The Atelier de la Rose provides excellent studio space, where I have again found calm and tranquillity for painting this May and June 2007.

The rich colour of my work is an attempt to evoke a time of day, the essence of a place, to try and capture moments. I often start by drawing in sketchbooks from observation when out and about, and may later distil these or draw from memory. The drawings act as 'glimpses' which may be used in the studio for paintings.
When I am not painting in the studio, I have visited many places including the superb bastide village of Monpazier close-by and, further afield, Conques, Albi, Moissac and Toulouse. There are also the superb markets at Puy l'Evêque and Prayssac where the flowers, fruit and vegetables provide inspiration and sustenance."
