Can Serrat International Art Centre

General information

Brief description of organisation

Can Serrat functions as a community where people from different cultures, fields, and topics of research can meet under the same roof. The house organizes ongoing projects that everyone is welcome to participate in during their stay here. These include, but are not limited to, a selected residency program for contemporary art and writing projects, a local nonprofit organization called Els Amics de Can Serrat that organizes activities within the local context, and a co-op for local and ecological products. Every month the house welcomes and organizes different activities in order to activate the research of the projects in production: sound recorded debates proposed by residents themselves, a monthly open mic, a dinner in which we invite local citizens of the village to have a cultural exchange with the household, project presentations, a book club in which we share resources by reading excerpts and texts in various languages, ping pong, and visits to relevant cultural project spaces and other residencies.

Can Serrat is a space of creation, community, and process. As such, the activities we organize are oriented around this idea and reflect an interest in being present to that process, research, question, doubt, understanding, curiosity, and debate.

Brief description of residency program

Can Serrat is an old farmhouse, classified and protected by 1187m², rehabilitated from 1989 in an international center for artistic creation and production, thanks to 11 Norwegian artists *. It is located in El Bruc, in an unbeatable environment, on the Montserrat mountain skirt and just 45 km from Barcelona.

Can Serrat develops a residency program for international and national contemporary art and writing projects. The coexistence between disciplines is an added point that allows enriching the process of creation and professionalization of the selected artists.

The program provides participants with a stay time between 3 weeks to 3 months, during which residents have access to shared or private rest areas, shared studio spaces with technical equipment (printmaking facilities, sound recording material, projectors, general tools for wood and metal) in addition to the 10,000 m2 of garden and its many available corners, terraces and stages. Each resident is supported with technical resources and facilities available at the residence and external means, through collaborations with companies in the environment to develop their creative and research process.

All the activities of dynamism and training for the invited resident have focused on coinciding with the location of the Catalan farmhouse as a space that is naturally devoted to research and long-term production without pressure or need for a definitive result. On the other hand, when selecting projects, the objective is to focus on content related to community issues, local production, translation, and ecology. Before, during and after the residence, the whole team focuses on caring for the relationship with the resident in addition to her.his work.

Therefore, Can Serrat proposes professional advice and organizes activities with the aim of generating and sharing content for research and productions:

PRESENTATION STATION (first week of each month)
A day dedicated to the discovery and understanding of the topics of works and projects recently produced by the residents of Can Serrat. Residents are divided in 2 groups at least. Each resident artist presents for two hours to different people at different times. The format is delimited to the studio space, without the use of projector, without the use of internet, as a small conversation / dialogue. This format allows to generate more freedom for discovery, a physical movement within the spaces that activates the brain, the possibility to adapt the language, and for each resident to rethink their way to explain their work.

Monthly meetings are organized with relevant professionals from the Catalan and Spanish scene adapted to the content of the works in process at Can Serrat.

On a monthly bases, those visits are organized with curators/artists/publisher/researcher/universities/art residencies.. to relevant spaces adapted to the content of the works in process at Can Serrat.

PUBLICATION#1 of all the projects produced per year within the residency program.

PUBLICATION#2 of a selection of works produced in residence in the book collection of Can Serrat (\'Parasitio\').
Parasitio is Can Serrat´s editorial collection created in 2018 in El Bruc. Each book appropriates the format of other collections and acts as an archive of the annual collaborative projects between our artist and writing residency and a cultural agent in the Catalan territory.
The books are infiltrated in bookstores and placed amongst the collections that they imitate.

every tuesday __ It is an invitation to have a conversation. It is proposed by a resident. It is based on a very specific topic related with her.his own research. The conversation is addressed to everyone interested in taking part in the conversation. It is not an art show nor a public reading, nor a passive activity.

It is expected from every participant to come with notes, references, thoughts in order to support and feed the conversation collectively. It is recorded with sound and later published online as a podcast. It becomes an archive.

Every third Wednesday of the month __ in another art space in Catalonia.
It is a micro installed for everyone. It is an invitation to speak, sing, stay silent.
It is an occasion to focus our attention on the sonority of words, the rhythms, the incomprehension, the silence, the awkwardness of being in front of.
It is making use of the space we are participating in.
It is for everyone.
