Red Gate Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

Red Gate was founded in 1991 by Australian Brian Wallace who first came to China in 1986 to study Chinese language at the People´s University, Beijing. He then went on to study art history in 1990 - 91 at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. In 1988 he began organizing exhibitions for young Chinese artists which eventually lead to the establishment of Red Gate Gallery at the Dongbianmen Watchtower. Since then Red Gate has been exhibiting up to eight solo shows per year, complimented by guest-curated exhibitions from China and overseas. The residency was started in 2001 when Brian purchased a space to begin hosting international artists.

Brief description of residency program

Red Gate Residency provides artists, curators, writers and academics with an opportunity to live and work in China. Red Gate has a number of fully self-contained apartments and studios available which are ready to use.

Red Gate assists all participants to connect with the art scene, meet local Chinese artists and to source art materials. We provide the necessary support and encouragement to help you get the most out of your stay here. We help get you settled, show you around, tell you where to buy the best Peking Duck, which part of the Great Wall not to go to, and where and when the latest openings are. All residents are invited to Red Gate Gallery events at the historic Ming Dynasty Watchtower including private dinners after the openings.
