Gilfelag Artist Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

The Guest-Studio is run by the the Gil Society on voluntary basis but owned by the Municipality of Akureyri.

In 1991 the foundation meeting of the Gil Society was held, marking the real beginning of the construction of an Art Centre in Grófargil which is now the focal point of culture in Akureyri. This is where we find the Akureyri Art Museum, the Akureyri School of Art, new exhibition halls of varying dimensions, for example in the Ketilhúsið which can also be used for conferences. This is the location of Punkturinn, Deiglan, multiple restaurants and artists studios. The Gil Society runs an artist residency and is an organiser of art exhibitions, music and other happenings connected with the diverse and ambitious cultural life of the townspeople of Akureyri.

Properties in Grófargil were previously used for various kinds of industries under the auspices of the Eyjafjörður Co-operative Society (KEA). Later Akureyri Municipality purchased the properties and the area has now been converted into a living cultural centre in co-operation with the Gil Society and other partners in the project.

Brief description of residency program

Gil Artist Residency is an Artist in Residence Program located in Akureyri, North Iceland. We are located in the town center, in the Art Street where the Art Museum and several galleries, artist studios, restaurants and bars are located. At the end of the street is the shore of Eyjafjörður, a beautiful mountain view of the fjord. Akureyri is a small town with an easy access to open nature.

We can accommodate one or two artists, in a private apartment with a studio, fully equipped kitchen & bathroom and a gallery for final events & exhibitions. Our exhibition space Deiglan is next door and has an internal access from the studio.
