General information

Brief description of organisation

Hrísey, the island, is by the north coast of Iceland, short from the arctic circle. The island is surrounded with a breathtaking view of the mountains on the coast of Eyjafjordur and the atmosphere will put you back in time of peace and wonderful nature. Perfect inspiration for artists.
The old schoolhouse has been decorated (facilitated) with four bedrooms and working area for three so individuals or groups can work their art.
The Old Schoolhouse is centered in the small village on the south coast of the island, with a good view over the area, ca. 10 min. walk from the harbor. Population is about 170 persons.
The island is 7,0 km2 and 7,5 km long. The only way to get to the island is by the ferry Sævar from Árskógssandur. It’s scheduled every hour in the summertime (different winter schedule) and takes approx. 20 min. There is a bus from Akureyri to the harbor of Árskógssandur (ca. 30 min. drive).
Service in the village of Hrísey: restaurant, shop, post office, bank and swimming pool.
Easy access to beautiful nature, bird watching and walking trails around the island.
In Old Schoolhouse is everything you need for pleasant stay: four different bedrooms, working area for three persons or groups, internet connection, sitting room combined with kitchen. Shower, washing machine, television, library etc.
The Old school is owned by the art group Nordanbal.

The main objective of the residency is to provide an opportunity for artists in all media including writers and performing artists to meet, exchange ideas, possibly cooperate and enjoy the peaceful life and scenery of the island.

Nordanbal will invite (grant) four artists a free stay in Old School in Hrísey – Iceland every year. The applicants need to fulfill the condition of the Nordanbal grant. The grant will be announced on the website. Condition of Nordanbal grant: Undersigned agrees to have open exhibition in the last week of residency.The artwork or the exhibition can be done in collaboration with or without the artists staying in Old school. How to reach

By train

There are no trains in Iceland. To take a bus to Hrísey you start by taking the Flybus from the airport to BSÍ - Central Bus Station in Reykjavik. From there you take the bus to Akureyri. See bus schedule on and click Norðurland. If you need to stay in Reykjavík one night because of this, SÍM – The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists rents out rooms for the night at affordable prices see or contact them at

By plane

You will be flying in to the international airport at Keflavík, Iceland. The main airlines flying to Iceland are Icelandair from European and US destinations. Also the low fare Iceland Express flies to certain destinations in Europe. You can then take internal flight to Akureyri and a bus to take the ferry to the island.

By car

From the airport is 45 km drive to Reykjavík and once there take highway #1 going north (destination Akureyri). Then you take the higway to Dalvík and to Árskógssandur where you take the ferry. See more information on the ferry here:
