Zona Imaginaria

General information

Brief description of organisation

The main idea of the Residence “Who can live in this House?” is to create a dialogue between local and foreign artists, offering them the opportunity to establish connections in the local community. “Zona Imaginaria” and the projects that run out of the space aim that the artists unite in their desire to erase social differences and this has become the principal guiding behind various projects housed here. The House does not work as a conventional residency, nor is it a museum or a gallery. It is a unique space which brings together artists who share a common desire to establish a connection both with each other and the local neighbourhood. The House offers a retreat from day-to-day life, where visiting artists can ask how their work relates to society. Every artist is invited to leave their mark on the house and take part in the projects being run from it. The house has a growing library and video library built with donations received from visiting artists and both local and international institutions.
Artists invited to live in the House have the opportunity to work with the children that come to the workshop “Pequeños Aprendices” (Young Apprentices), a free art workshop for children from the local neighbourhood from 6 to 15 years old. This workshop seeks to help children discover and develop their artistic talents and abilities. Both artists and children have the opportunity to learn from each other and the workshop also acts as a common space where children from different backgrounds can interact on equal terms. Artists are also invited to participate in “Proyecto Huerta” (“The Vegetable Garden”), that is one initiative undertaken at the house, intended to generate a sustainable project that connects with the local community. The planting of vegetables in a small garden on the sidewalk outside the house, has become a symbol of social integration, trust and confidence in the area. The aim of the project is to motivate more people to grow their own vegetable gardens and to extend the existing garden along the block. Everyone in the area has the opportunity to take part in this project.
