The Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture is Institution operating Internationally in the fields of Education , Arts and Sciences ,offering a Global platform for advanced Research.

It is located in the village Metaxata of Livatho ,island Kefalonia, Greece.

The Greek islands Kefalonia and Ithaca are situated in the Ionian Sea, in the middle of the Mediterranean. Thousands of years the island’s history is signing the Greek and European cultural, political, financial, historical, existence.

Geographical cross point of great significance for the financial and cultural communication between East and West, remains an area with considerable meaning for the understanding and advancement of the Greek, European and Global Civilization.

The geographical scope of the Center is extented in the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca, the Ionian Islands, Greece and the International Art’s and Sciences Community.
As a meeting point, cross road for cultures, people and ideas, with easy and direct air connection to the Capital European cities, helps the consolidation of an Institution with significant contribution in the Contemporary world of Arts, Science and Research.

The function of the Center involves a number of prestigious Academics, Scientists , Artists, Researchers, Higher Education Institutions, Organizations and Forums contributing in the advancement of the Knowledge through all the Art- Science fields. Under this focus are encouraged collaboration with Schools, Colleges, Universities and in Arts, Sciences and Research involved Institutions and Organizations from all over the World. The Institution is open to proposals and collaborations.

The I-Node( 2012 started the academic part of the Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture.

The Center´s Academic part started as an integral part of the Planetary Collegium under the academic supervision of Prof.Roy Ascott,the Founding President of the Planetary Collegium. The next steps led the Center in permanent collaborations with world leading Universities. The advanced academic research runs under the programs of UTS University of Technology Sydney, GSU,Georgia State University, NCSU, North Carolina State University.


The Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture forms a broad and effective program of innovative activities in Arts and related Sciences, developed through:
- Co-operation with educational institutions, organizations, culture factors, art promotion factors, artists ,researchers and scientists in every art field world wide.
-Promotion of research programs in Arts and Sciences
- Creation of clusters for artistic exchange and creative co-operation in Sciences and Arts.
- Organizing of events, art exhibitions, art competitions, art festivals.
- Organizing of educational programs, seminars, master classes, art workshops.
- Organizing programs for the information concerning the investigation, registration protection and rescue of the natural and cultural heritage.

The Center proceeds on establishing partnerships or collaborations with Universities and Institutions (private or public),looking toward the development of high level services to educational, research and cultural sectors.
In general terms (subject to change depending on the kind of the collaborating institution or the type of the partnership) the ICAC is offering opportunities to the collaborating Institutions as follow.
1.Contribution to ICAC activities in Academic and Cultural fields

2.Participation local and international programs (events, conferences, workshops, exhibitions, festivals, e.t.c)

3.Access to the Academic Community and colleagues in consultancy basis or support

4.Access to the Center facilities and equipment toward the realization of academic or cultural projects

1. Inviting in (and hosting partner’s) activities as conferences, research, workshops, lectures, seminars ,e.t.c. in both educational or cultural sectors.

Brief description of residency program


The Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture operates in a global environment in the fields of Higher Education, Arts and Research.

The International Strategy of the Institution, in accordance to its Establishment Act, is embracing the Globalization needs of the Academic and Art’s World. Knowledge, Academic Research and Innovation in across borders model constituteς the core program of the Institution. The increasing needs of the professional environments and the high demands of the work markets, continuous changes in the global financial system, fast economic, geopolitical, social transformations, migration challenges in new multicultural communities worldwide, stability issues and fast changing societies are the crucial factors considered.

Education is the key point of the leading program of the Ionion Center, advanced through the establishment of paths connecting the Art’s and the Academic world above bounds. The significance of the communication and connectivity, the intercultural understanding, new training languages and practices, creativity, innovation, new technologies, experimentation are adopted into the International program of the Ionion Center.

The residency program is inviting high level participations, embracing the Educational - Academic Research sectors through the Arts and Sciences. It is addressing artistic, creative,educational, academic advancement and research requirements of individual artists,scientists,students, researchers and higher education institutions, organizations, schools e.t.c.
It is offering residential areas, educational areas, exhibition/presentation areas , administrative support,international promotion platforms and advanced ways for Global connectivity.

The location of the Institution, in five minutes distance from the Island Kefalonia’s International airport ,the low prices in air tickets ( based on formal agreements of the Island with air companies) and the direct air connection to the European capital cities, helps all the interested factors as students, professors, reporters, art lovers, in arts and sciences involved factors and institutions to have direct access to the Center.
Additionally the natural beauty and diversity of the island, the warm calm seas and beaches, the unique creative atmosphere, the cultural wealth, the historical past of the two Homeric Islands re-discovered in every step, are factors inspiring and attracting artists, scientists, researchers.
The Center is offering to the interested the opportunity of sharing knowledge and practice into the frame of its International Academic Community.

Aims : The exchange of Knowledge , Creation , Artistic expertise ,innovative practices and performance and the establishment of a legacy advancing a global society focusing on the improvement and respect of the humanitarian values, inherited through the Civilization, are included in the basic aims of the program. The Ionion Center Program is establishing bridges toward connecting the contemporary International Art- Sciences Forums and Greece/Kefalonia /Ithaca, the past , the today and the future World.

Duration of the residency

There is no limit, starting from two weeks minimum, extended to one year. Acceptable are short or long term residencies, subjected to the early enrolment and availability of the space.


Eligible are All disciplines and interdisciplinary projects in Arts, Sciences and Technologies, Education and Research, included Environmental projects, Literary Arts , Performing Arts and Music, Applied Arts, Visual Arts , New Media. Creative activities and proposals in Arts, Research and Education are enrolled into the Center’s program, supported and promoted.

Work equipment

Available are professional spaces and work-studios : The Theater of the Center and the Studio and Exhibition Hall are offered fully equipped with professional projection- lighting- sound systems. The above spaces are available for educational use or creation and also for presentation /exhibition for personal or group/institutional programs.

Tables, easels , basic equipment are fully available and the use of the above spaces will be collective / private or personal depend on the project and the agreement.
Additionally for the needs of the creative process( education ,classes or personal projects) sites of special interest around the island will be offered as work spaces for shooting- filming and /or performance and exhibition spaces[such as archaeological sites, historical buildings, ancient villages e.t.c]
The Ionion Center network is operating under a very well organized administration, toward keeping a top level for its activities and network, considering every artist, scientist, academic, educator or Institution as special case, offering all the opportunities to be realized something really exceptional.
Along with the personal assistance and support,the Center is working beyond the material needs of the artists, trying to help them to establish innovative advanced projects. This is a process demanding to : a. Connect them with the local community in the fields of their specific work and activities [artists, researchers, scientists, archaeologists, architects, authors, educators and so on].
b. To connect them through an international network with the Center Academic team and the top academic programs of the collaborating higher education institutions. Under the above focus specific programs are transformed into international projects

Grants Policies

All the projects taking place into the residency program are eligible for the Grants of the year
Grants 1000 up to 30.000 euro for the regular residency program are available for each year.

Grants 2000 up to 50.000 euro for the International Forum SEA(S) are available

All the participants and the projects (realized ) into the frame of the residency program connected to the International Forum are eligible for the grants announced . Grants start from 1000 euros, going up to 50.000 euros for the year. Selection is based on the compliance of the project to the thematic character of the Forum/Festival (SEA(S),with special attention to the innovation of the project, the high quality of the work, the scale and its continuous effect for the Artistic development of the Island and its impact on the Arts Community.

Evaluation and Selection Committee is the Curatorial Team and Members of the Academic and Administrative Team of the Ionion Center .

All participations are granted CERTIFICATE OF PARTICIPATION

ALL Participants enrolled in both programs are welcome, after their official enrolment, to apply for supporting documentation, that will help them to ensure funding from any supporting Artists Organizations of their preference in regional or Global level.

For residencies are offered Into the Ionion Center residence areas every season of the year fully equipped rooms, apartments , suites for short or long residence. Welcome are artists, scientists, researchers, students, art schools, art institutions, artists groups, visitors groups connected to artistic or scientific activities , students groups up to 20 persons.
Luxurious rooms for 1, 2, 3, 4 persons fully equipped, with kitchen.
Luxurious apartments for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 persons fully equipped, with kitchen.
Luxurious suite for one to four persons with autonomous bedroom, baths, kitchen, desk, dinning-living room, veranda with open view to the Ionian Sea and daily care from experienced personnel.
The accommodation areas are part of the building complex but keeping independence .In the cases of Artists – Scientists- Educators – Researchers is offered: A personal room + bathroom fully equipped, room service ,24 hours high speed internet access, use of laundry , kitchen personal or shared [depend on the space preference ], garden access or balcony, studio for art creation and personal support. Every day is included as a standard offer full breakfast ( bread, butter, eggs, jams, honey, milk, cereals, hams – cheese, fruits, tea, coffee, sweets and more, depend on the season of the year).During the day and night there are always free and available in the kitchen snacks, sweets, tea, coffee, milk, juices, fruits, pies, pizzas and basic goods [pastas, vegetables, sauces, oil, spices, and many other things].
The space is attended by experienced personnel 24 hours a day, offering high standard services.
Αll the residence areas are safe and accessible to children and to people with special needs.

Studio/ Workspaces

The entire Ionion Center’s building complex is designed to address activities related to high performance artistic , scientific and educational needs. Personal projects ,group projects, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, presentations, conferences, symposia, semester or year abroad projects, summer and field studies on arts and sciences, educational trips, connected or not to the Center’s official program, are offered specific attention and support.

Spaces for educational needs, art creation and theory for more than 100 persons are available as follow:

For Visual Arts : Two equipped studios with day and electric light, to host workshops, open studios and related activities Teaching rooms fully equipped for 15 to 25 persons.

For exhibitions : Two exhibition halls of 100 and 120 square meters. For extensive exhibitions : The entire building inside and outside is a venue for exhibitions for all disciplines. Also the collaboration of the Center with the Local Authority and the role of the Center as Cultural Ambassador of the Ionian Islands Region, is ensuring the most exceptional exhibition spaces in use of the residents( such as historical buildings, the Medieval Castle area, archaeological sites e.t.c)

For Performing Arts, Literary Arts, Music and Dance: Theater, 100 seats, 80square meters stage, actors preparation and residence area, professional light and sound systems, to host: Theater education, theater rehearsals, performances, books and scientific works presentations, Music education, rehearsals, choral, concerts, Dance education and performances.

Also available :high speed wireless internet, technical support, secretarial and administrative support and assistance, 24 hours supervising personnel and, according the case by case needs and the events on program, technical, personal or other assistance. Personal and technical assistance is offered too for individual artists, faculty members, study directors, students, schools, colleges. The Educational function of the Center supports activities such as art theory, lectures, seminars, master classes, congresses, conventions, presentations, projections, films, motion pictures.

There are available specific grants for the registered candidates. For all the programs, participants,artists, scientists or institutions after the official acceptance confirm is offered support through the Center administrative system and documentation, toward sucessfully applying for grants or funds to their region, institutions and grant/funding providers. In addition is available the annual 30.000 euro grant to be offered through the development-realisation of the best program. It will be offered after evaluation process[evaluation team will be the academic board of the Center]. The grant winners of the year are announced the first two months of the next year.

By plane

Access to Kefalonia:
By airplane (Kefalonia International airport, 3 minutes from the Center) in day basis morning and evening flights from Athens International Airport.

By airplane (Kefalonia International airport), direct air connections from April to October are connecting the island with all the European capitals.
Direct flights from Middle East are also landing in Kefalonia.

The Center is located in three minutes distance from the Kefalonian international airport.
Many car rental companies are operating into and around the airport.

By bus directly from the Athens central bus station to Argostoli, capital of the island(ticket including bus and ferry boat trip).

By ferry boat from the Kyllini port to Poros port -and Argostoli
