Villa Sträuli

General information

Brief description of organisation

The Artist-in-Residence Program in the Villa Sträuli is run by the Sulzberg Foundation in Winterthur.

Doris Sträuli-Keller, a Winterthur-based music educator and arts patron, founded the Sulzberg Foundation in 1999. In accordance with the wishes of the founder and her husband, Dr. Hans Sträuli Jr., who predeceased her, their villa and their estate are to be used for the purposes of supporting and advancing the arts.

Brief description of residency program

The Sulzberg Foundation provides three live-in studios for creative artists in the Villa Sträuli: one for visual arts, one for literature or new media, and one for the performing arts or music.

The aim of the Villa Sträuli residencies is to provide artists from all fields with an opportunity to work creatively and make new contacts in a stimulating environment. The residencies are designed to support international artists and to promote intercultural exchange. Artists whose main place of residence is Switzerland cannot be awarded residencies. Creative artists of any age or national origin, and working in any discipline, as well as scholars and educators associated with the arts (e.g. curators, museum educators) can apply. For reasons of space, the studio for visual arts is not suited for sculpture. Applicants should be able to communicate in English or one of Switzerland’s national languages (German, French, or Italian)

Two studios are awarded simultaneously for residencies of three months each. One studio is granted in cooperation with Swiss institutions. One residency per year is awarded to a project that relates to the residency location (the Villa Sträuli or the city of Winterthur). If a studio is unoccupied, it may also be rented upon request as a living/working space for a short-term residency (and by artists visiting or performing in Winterthur, for instance, or even for swiss artists). Please do not send unsolicited applications for short-term residencies - we ask that you contact us first:

As the salons on the ground floor are used for the Villa’s own cultural events and by the bistro and can also be hired out for private functions, there are often non-resident guests in the building. And so while the Villa is a tranquil place, it can, at times, also be quite bustling and lively. Our artists-in-residence are, of course, invited to our cultural events.

Villa Sträuli is located in central Winterthur, across the city park in immediate proximity to the theatre, museum of art, and the concert hall in the Stadthaus.
