Associació cultural Sa Taronja

General information

Brief description of organisation

THE LAST ARTIST RESIDENCIES can now be booked at Sa Taronja, an artist-initiated organisation in wonderful rural surroundings, three km from the sea, in Mallorca.

For reasons of age, health and lack of financial resources the owner is about to give up . . .just as, ironically, the centre has been given a chance to create a new 15-apartment residence in one of its old agricultural halls. Sa Taronja is expected to carry on until midsummer 2016 . . . or maybe even a few months more . . . but if a visionary millionaire cannot be found to support it, buy it, or initiate the building of the planned new residence wing (which will make it become completely self-financing, even profitable), it will simply be closed when the money runs out, and the island will lose its most idiosyncratic cultural centre.

Over the last 15 years it has been supported in part by grants from local authorities and private sponsors, and enjoyed a perod of very intense activity. Although the economic climate in Spain meant the end of public funding for a while, there are now some encouraging signs on the horizon.

If you believe that art is vital to society and you know of anyone who might be interested in giving a new meaning and direction to their life by plunging into a fascinating cultural adventure that creates a profound impact on the lives of people around them . . . has enormous potential and involves spending lots of time in the Mediterranean . . . put them in touch with us!

The light should not go out on Sa Taronja’s golden oranges! The adventure must go on!

Brief description of residency program

Sa Taronja is an independent, not-for-profit art centre in Mallorca converted from an old chicken farm, located in the village of Andratx, about 30 minutes from Palma de Mallorca and three kilometers from the sea.

In its 6000m2 grounds, there are three enormous chicken sheds, each 70m long by 6m wide, now converted into a gallery, a soundproof music practice studio, an art classroom, a conference room, a theatre, a multipurpose events hall with a 15m long hardwood dance floor, stage and bar; a photographic darkroom and 10 working artists´ studios, mostly rented to local residents. There is also a large and a small outdoor stage for summer performances, and the old farmhouse with the association´s offices and restaurant.

Currently we have two (self catering) studio-apartments for use by artists, musicians or writers who would like to spend up to a month (or longer) working on an artistic project. Costs depend on the time of year (cheapest between November and April) and whether a separate studio or other facilities are required. We can normally arrange for a show or a performance by the artist at the end of his/her stay. In the off-season the place is very tranquil. It´s good place to work on an artistic or writing project, or prepare a new performance with a group.

Potential residents should submit a description of their project and requirements
(we can provide painting/sculpture studio space, theatre, piano, soundproof practice room, ceramic studio, some equipment, projector, etc, introductions to artists and galleries, and practice and performance opportunities). Despite our rural setting, we encourage new media artists to apply.

We are known for our PING! festival of experimental art and music (2004-2010), our classical music series Serenata Berlin and our Open Mic nights. The centre is used for day and evening classes (dance, music, painting, sculpture).

Coming from Palma direction:

Approaching Andratx, take the PORT D´ANDRATX exit. At the roundabout, turn right, towards the village (not left to the Port) and in about 50 yards, at the next roundabout, take a left into the calle Habana (indicated SA TARONJA). Continue on this street past the childrens´ school and the builders´ merchants TuCasa, and past a small SPAR supermarket on the left (approx. 300 m). Shortly after the SPAR, you will come to a five-way crossroads. Here you turn left (not sharp left) into the Calle Andalucia.

Straight ahead, about 150 meters, just before the road dips to ford a streambed, you will find SA TARONJA / LIMON Y CHELO on the left. We have a large off-road parking area.
