Brief description of residency program

A working knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required.

Meals, a private room and work space are provided in a Home Stay with a local host family.

Often accommodated; Residency applications on short notice: non-artist companions; children.

Visual artists are offered the opportunity to exhibit at the prestigious National Gallery of Costa Rica. Composers can arrange in advance to have access to a piano as needed.

Common living space (living room/dining room/outdoor areas) may be shared with the family or may be separate for the artists; weekly laundry, housekeeping and change of bed & bath linens provided.

Preference may be given to residencies of one month or longer. Residencies of less than one month are also considered.

Urban conveniences within a tropical cloud forest setting. Under one hour from the beach.

Two events, usually one meal and one local outing are hosted by ODYSSEYS each week. This is an opportunity for all artists in residence to share a meal and/or event with each other and with the Program Director.

As part of hosted meals, artists have the opportunity (always optional) to share work: open studios, presentations and readings, etc... When possible these opportunities will also be provided publicly at least once during each residency, often at the end, at appropriate local venues such as the Figueres Museum and Cultural Center.

Optional outings to explore galleries, museums, theatres and other aspects of local culture, as well as beaches, volcanoes, volcanic hot springs, virgin rain forest and many other natural wonders, are scheduled with the input of all artists in residence.
