NARS Foundation

General information

Brief description of organisation

The New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit arts organization committed to supporting artists and curators on an international level as well as engaging the local community in Brooklyn and the Greater New York area. NARS provides an array of creative support services and professional development opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists through short-term integrated residency programs, affordable long-term studio spaces, progressive exhibition programs, international exchanges, and engaging public programs that foster global understanding and dynamic cross-cultural dialogues. These services operate in conjunction with our community outreach initiatives to promote greater accessibility to contemporary art for the under-served local community in south Brooklyn. Our mission is to present diverse platforms on which to nurture creative inspiration and innovative cross-pollination of ideas.

Brief description of residency program

The NARS Residency Program offers 24/7 access to furnished, private or semi-private studio spaces (280-325 sq ft) in our diverse artist community in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. As a studio based residency, the focus is on the artistic process and the experimentation that results from working alongside other artists.

Artists meet with 4-6 studio visitors each month, gaining invaluable feedback and expanding their network of
artists and professionals in NY and internationally. Residents are provided with administrative, curatorial, and professional support to explore and expand the scope of their artistic practice through research, dialogue, and the production of new projects.

Public presentation opportunities include a curated exhibition in the NARS gallery, bi-annual Open Studios, and the Entree/Encore program, through which artists share research and work through artist talks, discussions, screenings, workshops, and performances. The NARS Gallery hosts exhibitions year-round.
