Flor del Sol

General information

Brief description of organisation

Flor del Sol is an Art Center run by us, Anita (Architect and artist) and Jose (Anthropologist and artist), in our private living-situation.
Our property covers eight hectares of tropical flora and fauna. The majority of the land is covered in rainforest that we keep in its natural state. The developed portion of our land is home to many fruit trees. The buildings, spread throughout the land are integrated in to the natural setting and our daily life is woven between inside and outside spaces. One of the buildings is the studio space that we make available to resident artists; it has the form of a cube that measures seven meters in each directions.

Surrounding Area
Buena Vista is the closest village. It is a 45-minute walk or a quick six Boliviano moto-taxi ride. With cafes and restaurants surrounding a beautiful plaza and colonial architecture throughout the center of town, Buena Vista is a very pleasant place to pass time. The adjacent countryside of rolling hills is covered with divisions of forest, fruit trees, and pastures for livestock. As the name says, there are many beautiful views, especially of the mountains of Amboro National Park, the final steps of the Cordillera Oriental – the eastern foothills of the Andes. Another attraction is the Surutu river, which is only three kilometers from the village, and is a nice place to take a refreshing dip.

We neither receive funding nor ask for it. We finance with our own income. Two people help us mantaining the place.

We request a basic rate of 10.- EURO a day and collaboration in improving our space with an average of two and a half hours of volunteer work per day. Those who are not interested in volunteer work we ask for an aditional daily contribution of 10.- to 15.- EURO.

If you want to buy and prepare your own food you can get supplies in Buena Vista: there are two markets and other stores, but if you want to share food or cooking with us the contribution is about 8.-EURO per day.

Brief description of residency program

Living in the countryside in a beautiful natural setting with our six dogs we like to share our unique space with artists who have common interests.

We offer a studio located in a tropical park, lodging and breakfast, available for artists of writing, painting, sculpting, mixed media, performing or living. The studio space measures seven meters in each directions. The small cabaña guesthouse has a sitting room and two bedrooms.

The above mentioned collaboration of two hours and a half of volunteer work per day means either maintenancing and upkeeping of our gardens, areas of planted flowers and fruit trees or of our buildings as well as other tasks that might become necessary.

We appreciate if nature is an inspiration for the artistic expression. It would be nice if one conducts art workshops with local children, but both are not conditions to be accepted to this residency. At the end we would appreciate a small presentation of the work for invited guests, however we do not receive funding for this project. In special cases we can seek funding together with the artists to prepare an exhibition.
