c.r.e.t.a. rome: ceramics residencies exhibitions teaching & the arts

General information

Brief description of organisation

c.r.e.t.a. rome was co-founded in 2012 by an Italian ceramic sculptor, Paolo Porelli, and an American art historian, Lori-Ann Touchette. The Italian word for clay "creta" seemed perfect to express our commitment to creating an international reference point for ceramics and the arts in the eternal city of Rome. Moreover, taken as an acronym, it spells out our main activities: ceramics, residencies, exhibitions, teaching and the arts. The cultural association promotes the ceramic arts, but also the visual and humanistic arts through events, cultural ‘happenings’, demonstrations, lectures, seminars, courses and didactic visits, workshops, exhibitions and artist residencies. c.r.e.t.a. rome was created to serve as a point of encounter for international exchange between artists, collectors, donors and the public.

We are located in the mid 16th-century Palazzo Delfini in the historical center of Rome, just blocks from the Capitoline Hill on one side and the Jewish quarter on the other. We also have a second studio available for residencies in the countryside of Rome near the lake of Bracciano. This option is ideal for collaborative projects and families.

Brief description of residency program

c.r.e.t.a. rome offers self-funded residencies to ceramicists, visual artists and writers for periods ranging from 4 weeks to 3 months. The residency fee covers a semi-private equipped studio, shared accommodation (private room) in the historical center of Rome, and technical assistance in procuring materials for artists´s work, firings, etc., advice on museums, galleries and sites in Rome and beyond.

We also have a residency program in the countryside near the lake of Bracciano. This residency is particularly suited to collaborative projects, non-ceramic artists, ceramic artists who work with reduction firing and/or artists who wish to be accompanied by their companions/children.

Artists will have the opportunity to focus on their art, whether it be creating a new body of work, expanding a well-established oeuvre or allowing themselves to draw inspiration from their surroundings and the centuries of culture that define the eternal city. In addition, artists will have access to the wealth of galleries and exhibitions in Rome and beyond. Each resident will have an opportunity to present a proposal to exhibit the work produced during the residency period in a final show.

A selection committee composed of artists, art critics and historians carefully evaluates applicants based on their artistic experience, merit and project proposal.
