Brief description of organisation

Allenheads Contemporary Arts (ACA) is an independent arts venue located in remote rural Northumberland in England´s highest village.

The venue is a space for research, production and the presentation of new work by artists ranging from new graduates to the internationally recognized.

ACA is a Company Limited by Guarantee, with not for profit status. It is run by its co-founders Artistic Director Alan Smith and Development Director, Helen Ratcliffe along with its board of Directors.

Brief description of residency program

ACA offers self-funded residencies at its base in the Old Schoolhouse Allenheads in Northumberland.

Creative practitioners can immerse themselves in a stimulating, expansive and striking environment, to explore possibilities and practices within a new context.

Whether you need to research or produce, ACA can provide a supportive environment, for creative practitioners from all disciplines.

Your visit can be totally self-steered or you may wish to create a programme that would be informed by a wide range of expertise provided by the host organisation.

ACA welcomes enquiries for single person or group bookings from all levels of experience. We have a long history of working with students and academics from foundation level right through to PhD. These residential periods can be independently organised or directed through your educational institution.

Accommodation fees (example based on 4 people staying at same time):

Single bedroom - £175 per week
Twin or double room - £150 per week
Studio Apartment with separate bathroom - £200 per week

How to reach

By car

Allenheads is a 1 hour drive from Newcastle Upon Tyne, in the North East of England. Newcastle has the nearest airport and Hexham, the nearest train station. A bus service from Allenheads to Hexham runs daily (except on Sundays), and takes approximately 30 minutes. Hexham is a large semi-rural town with shops, supermarkets, as well as most public facilities and amenities. The closer village of Allendale (7 miles away) has a good, small supermarket.
