General information

Brief description of organisation

Culture Vultures ( C.V. ) is an artist’s lead organization, founded in Sefrou, Morocco in 2009. Alongside hosting artist residencies, C.V.’s portfolio also includes community art projects, cross cultural events and artisan collaborations, all with a social responsible components with art at its core.

This artist-run initiative comes from the heart of a small Market town in Northern Morocco. Sefrou was the chosen location for this venture for being close to modernity, steeped in a rich history and still very connected to traditional living. The small ancient medina hosts an array of artisans and a rich multicultural history.

Brief description of residency program

This small organization and the residency platform has two functioning periods, programmed residencies or open residencies. The first provides a themed working program and the later is for self-governing projects.

Three individual artist lodgings are located around the old medina ( see ) Small simple studio spaces and an office are also places around the old city.

Sefrou and Fez are ideal locations for researchers and artists whose projects focus on Jewish heritage, traditional crafts, Islamic design or architecture or anthropology. Our residency also suits arts professionals who wish to spend focused time on a given project and those with a curiosity for the other cultures, cross cultural dialogue and a thirst for new discoveries.

Support as an arts practitioner or researcher in Sefrou, is provided through the sharing of contacts and experiences.

Community connections are often made remotely.
Independent and self-supporting artists are the ones who gain the most from this residency. The community of Sefrou is welcoming to resident artists and visitors.

The local language spoken in Sefrou’s community is Moroccan Arabic. Classical Arabic, French and Arabic dialects are comprehended and English is spoken within the organization. Moroccan Arabic classes can be arranged as can interpreters and facilitators for projects.

The remaining period of 2018 is a self-governing submissions.
