Art Ichol

General information

Brief description of organisation

Art Ichol: A Creative Escape, is a Gallery Sanskriti initiative. Gallery Sanskriti, located in Kolkata, opened in 1990 to focus on displaying the works of Bengal artists. Over the past 25 years, Gallery Sanskriti expanded its scope to work with a wide range of artists working in all varieties of media. We have hosted art retreats at the Maihar House location until finally deciding to construct a large permanent facility specifically designed for artist residency. Gallery Sanskriti is proud to offer artists the opportunity to visit this region of India and work on a large scale in our open-air studios, and give the locals a beautiful sculpture garden to visit regularly.

Brief description of residency program

Art Ichol: A Creative Escape is located in the rural city of Maihar in Madhya Pradesh, India. Our residency program provides the space, tools, and inspiration for artists to experiment and produce works in stone, bronze, clay, and other media. While the visual arts, particularly sculpture, is the primary focus, we welcome applications from those who participate in the literary arts – such as writers and journalists – as well. Our on-site artist aids and technicians allow artists to work in mediums outside of their specialty and non-artists to learn and attempt simple sculpting. With their guidance, residents will have the opportunity to try different art techniques and the freedom to learn and experiment in other crafts. Our center is the first of its kind to offer an outdoor sculpture gallery in India. Our unique sculpture garden displays large works for visitors to enjoy on their way to an indoor gallery, which houses smaller-scale sculptures and two-dimensional works.

Art Ichol: A Creative Escape accepts applicants on an ongoing basis. The duration of residency can be from one week to three months. In addition to the main facilities at Art Ichol, there are two more locations within an eight-kilometer radius: The Maihar Heritage House with a ceramic centre and Amaria: The Writer´s Retreat. Each location provides a different and unique atmosphere. We hope to attract creative individuals by providing the space and resources for them to work and present to them the culture, history, and beauty of India.
