Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre is a place where history goes hand in hand with the contemporaneity and creates a unique and inspiring place for creative expression and experience.
Located in the former Artillery Arsenal building of the Daugavpils Fortress the venue and setting of the Daugavpils Mark Rothko art centre already gives away that this is not just an art centre. To the contrary, the majestic exterior of the building fully matches the interior design and artwork found in the centre itself, among which paintings of the renowned artist Mark Rothko himself.
Apart from exhibition spaces art centre also has areas where its educational and entertainment function get shaped, such us a concert hall, a conference sector, the art residences – where artists are invited to stay and work – and a children’s room – where kids can explore their creativity and be educated about art.

Brief description of residency program

International Residence “Mark Rothko” is organized in Daugavpils which is known as the native city of Mark Rothko, a worldwide famous artist. This residency is aimed to contribute to spreading the language and expression of Rothko paintings to a broad public and to make Rothko accessible to everyone.
Mark Rothko Plein Airs in Daugavpils are annual events. Since 2004 artists from Armenia, USA, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Denmark, France, Estonia, India, Italy, Canada, Russia, United Kingdom, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Ukraine, Germany and Latvia have participated in it. Since 2013 Plein Air has been transformed into International Residence. Art works created during the residency make art collection more than 200 art works, which were created by 112 artists from 25 countries.
Rothko art centre offers a varied residency programs for:
• painters,
• art theory specialists,
• ceramics,
• graphic
• individual artists residencies
The residences as a place includes:
• 4 working studios;
• living sector (14 persons);
• project expositional sector (330 m2)
Studio for the painting (110 m2)includes 15 easels for painters’ convenience
Studio for the graphics and textile (50 m2)includes: etching machine, sewing machine, overclock, ironing board, shelves and tables for graphics.
2 workshops (50 m2)
For guests’ convenience, kitchen with refrigerator, dishes and tea-pot and washing machine are available.
Rooms with TV, internet and bathroom.

We offer two kinds of residency programs:
• Open call programs:
o Mark Rothko residency every September
o Graphic residency in October
o Ceramic residency in August
o Textile residency in November
o Multimedia residency in June
For open call programs artists have to pay only for their transport costs. The other costs are covered by organizers.
• Individual or group residency programs.
For this program artists have to pay their transport costs and special price (with discount) for their accommodation.
Rothko art centre is unique place for creative working process with possibility to live and work and meet other artists; here, it will be possible to re-live the atmosphere of early 20th century Dvinsk that formed the world renowned artist’s personality.
