PICTURE BERLIN

General information

Brief description of organisation

Founded in 2009 by artists for artists, PICTURE BERLIN has been run by artists for artists as a hybrid program merging the concentrated studio practice of an artist residency with the support of an art academy. PICTURE BERLIN becomes a network designed in part by each session’s artists. As the weeks go by, living and working together, the boundaries dissolve. There is no separation between studio practice, a one-on-one critique, or a shared meal. Every experience informs the next.

PICTURE BERLIN moves headquarters every year. Each Summer´s Session has been choreographed and designed to make the best use of what the city has to offer that year. The city becomes the basis for the experience and for the program it´s self. The group is as likely to meet up in a park as they are in an artist´s studio for an artist talk or one-on-one portfolio review. The nature of the program is to stay flexible and move with the city itself.

We believe that PICTURE BERLIN is not just a program but it is a way to approach art-making and living with art as a daily experience that considers and includes the community at large.

Brief description of residency program

PICTURE BERLIN is a hybrid residency / art academy dedicated to dialoguing on contemporary art.

Up until 2018, we have been running our program every Summer and Fall.
In 2019, we will be taking a pause in our regular programming to celebrate the last 10 years of PICTURE BERLIN with exhibitions, meetings, performances, reviews, walks and dinners - all mentioned programming, under the header INTERIORS TO BEING, will be open and free to the public. (Thanks to a substantial grant from the Haupstadtkulturfond by way of the Berlin Senate).
The participants of next Summer\'s program will be our alumni and Berlin based artists and curators who have contributed to the program over the last 9 years.

Our programming will resume with changes and new locations in 2020.
Our next application round will take place in Fall 2019.
