Space 118

General information

Brief description of organisation

Space 118 provides five studios, located in south Bombay, on a short-term basis (1-2 months) to artists for creative study and research as part of its commitment to supporting emerging art practitioners from all parts of the country and the world. Situated in south central Mumbai, it is within close proximity to the artists district in Colaba and the art fraternity at large.

We are looking at a diverse group of artists working in the studios to create a lively, supportive and dynamic work environment. We aim to foster the exchange of ideas and experiences amongst artists who work in different fields of art practice. In exchange for their enriching time in our studios, artists are required to grant an artwork either created during their studio practice or from previous collections. These artworks are catalogued and exhibited periodically to generate funds for the sustainability and maintenance of the space. Artists can choose to apply either for the studio practice only, or for studio and accommodation.

We have completed 10 years of Space118 (2009-2019) and have set a different vision and set of plans for the next decade.
We are looking at setting up the Space118 Contemporaries 2020,where we have three time- slots of two months each March-April, June-July, and September-October, 2020 in which we would nominate 2 artists and 1 writer for a period 2 months, who would be selected by a prestigious jury including Shilpa Gupta-Artist, Mortimer Chatterjee-Gallerist, Anurag Khanna-Collector for the artists.

The writers will be selected by Anupa Mehta and Nancy Adajania.

We have also instituted the Space118 Fine art Grant for one artist of Indian origin who shall get a residency all paid for and production grant upto 1 lakh and an exhibition for 2 months in Bombay.
