UNIDEE - University of Ideas at Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto Onlus

General information

Brief description of organisation

Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto, a non-profit organisation of social utility, was instituted in 1998 as a concrete action of the Progetto Arte Manifesto, in which the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto proposed a new role for the artist: that of placing art in direct interaction with all the areas of human activity informing society. The name Cittadellarte incorporates two meanings: that of the citadel or rather an area where art is protected and well defended, and that of the city, which corresponds to the idea of openness and interrelational complexities with the world.

Cittadellarte is a laboratory, a generator of creative energy that fosters processes of development across a diversity of fields: culture, production, economics and politics. Through its activities, Cittadellarte pursues a basic objective: to take artistic interventions into every sector of civil society, to contribute responsibly and profitably while addressing the profound changes of the present time.

Cittadellarte is structured organically according to a cellular system with a main nucleus separating into different nuclei, defined Uffizi (Art, Education, Ecology, Economy, Politics, Spirituality, Production, Work, Communication, Architecture, Fashion and Nourishment). Each office carries out its own activity addressing specific areas of the social system, with the aim to produce a responsible transformation of global society, starting from the locality.

Brief description of residency program

UNIDEE – University of Ideas is a multifaceted platform offering an educational programme of residential modules - taking place both at Cittadellarte and at academic partners’ sites internationally - alongside a series of artists’ residency projects.
Based on interdisciplinary research, knowledge sharing and experience exchange, the programme fosters processes of cross-pollination to investigate the relationship between art and public sphere.

In 2015, UNIDEE - University of Ideas at Cittadellarte widens its activities and launches a new educational programme, characterised by a dynamic, flexible structure of weekly residential modules, aiming to trigger and pave the way for a (re)localisation of participatory artistic practices in social contexts. The formative modules, delivered both at Cittadellarte as well as at academic partners’ sites (universities, Fine Arts Academies, research centres, in Europe and beyond), will develop parallel to well established (e.g. the network RESO’) and new (e.g. Connective Residency) residency programmes.

This decision, after fifteen years as an artists’ residency, stems from a season of transition. In 2014, UNIDEE - University of Ideas articulated its programme through, in July, an international workshop focusing on education and socially engaged art while reflecting upon its own future, and more broadly on that of residencies, and in the Autumn, the experimentation of an innovative residential format.

Designed for artists, curators as well as students, social entrepreneurs and cultural project managers, the modules are open also to members of the broader public who are interested in delving into themes such as: social responsibility, urban transformation, participatory art practices, demopraxy, alternative models of local economic development, sustainability within fashion and construction industries, et cetera.

In keeping with Michelangelo Pistoletto’s foundational principle of Cittadellarte as an “interdisciplinary educational laboratory” (Manifesto Progetto Arte, 1994) – of which UNIDEE was one of the first pillars –, this new experimental educational programme aims to provide practices, methodologies and tools apt at stimulating the emergence of a new figure: the “artivator” – a catalyst of artistic projects for a responsible social transformation.

UNIDEE, beside its identity as a site for cultural production, sets out to become a research centre with at its core the relationship between art and public sphere at its core, and to represent a reference point for the exchange of theoretical and practical knowledge between Cittadellarte and the global community of social agents active in their own local contexts.

UNIDEE - University of Ideas experimentally undertakes a collaboration with universities and other public educational institutions, not placing itself in an alternative position but rather proposing an alternative to the traditional educational system. Designed for multiple publics, it fosters processes of cross-pollination between academic and artistic knowledge. It aims towards the development of relational skills, the acquisition of socially responsible behaviours that value diversity, the development of an “effective” practice of horizontal thought embodying the other’s point of view, and the possibility to “err”, to go off topic in the name of a constant research for new directions and means of expression.

As an educational artistic project, UNIDEE - University of Ideas faces several challenges: its accretion in time and its impact on the locality. To succeed in becoming a natural site for daily learning and dialogue, the programme must be conceived as a long term endeavour. It shall be engaging continuously with civil society not only through dialogue and active participation, but also through the (re)localisation of those processes of symbolic identification on the side of the modules’ participants, once they go back to their original social contexts and groups. Pistoletto claims that “if there is to be any possibility of openness to change in humanity, this depends primarily on education” (The Third Paradise, 2010). UNIDEE - University of Ideas concurrently embodies a stepping stone and end point of a wider vision finalised at a re-foundation of the educational system as a whole, starting from childhood. This new system maintains the principle of educational offer as an agent for the development of collective conscience and as an activator of ideas, dynamics and aesthetic and ethical devices for social transformation.

The new UNIDEE - University of Ideas at Cittadellarte is characterized by the offer of specific seminar and laboratory modules which also frame the artists’ residency programmes, thus suggesting a redefinition, from an educational point of view and within a process of thematic inquiry, of the traditional concept of artists’ residency, generally finalized to the production and exhibition of works of art realized in situ.

The structure of UNIDEE - University of Ideas is articulated through three types of activities investigating the relationship between art and public sphere:

- Weekly residential modules taking place at Cittadellarte, open to students (who can gain ECTS credits), professionals, activists as well as members of society. They are held by mentors who are experts on the three broad thematic areas chosen each year and examined in depth through participatory practices and a multidisciplinary approach.
- Residency programmes for international artists at Cittadellarte
- Connective Residency at Cittadellarte
