Brief description of organisation

Tenjinyama Art Studio Sapporo provides ongoing self-funded residencies for any amount of time up to 3 months as well as occasional thematic residencies that are detailed at the time of open call. Set atop the park in southern Sapporo, the building offers panoramic views of the city and its surrounding mountains. Tenjin-yama Art Studio houses 13 studio apartments, versatile larger spaces, as well as a gallery space on the ground floor. Local residents as well as international artists and residents from a wide range of creative backgrounds use this unique public space. This provides a great forum for local engagement as well as an open dialogue between the artists and the community. Tenjinyama Art Studio opened to the public in May 31st 2014 to celebrate the opening of the Sapporo International Art Festival.

Brief description of residency program

Tenjin-yama Art Studios offers ongoing residencies which are funded by the artist and provide them with a studio apartment, use of all the public facilities and a wealth of local knowledge from the staff. The ongoing residencies are open to any individual or group in any creative field who need access to activity in Sapporo, a space to research or produce work from, or a base from which to explore Hokkaido for creative means. Residencies that offer financial support to artists are detailed at the time of open calls.

The application should be submitted at least five business days and up to two months in advance (Weekends and holidays include between December 29 and January 3).
Practice and/or performance with loud music and heavy sound can be restricted. Please consult us prior to the reservation.

<Studio Information>
Tenjinyama Art Studios off three different sizes of studio apartments; Studio A, is a small studio is suitable for research and writing with your own laptop. Total 6 studios Size: 19.0m²(204.51ft2). Studio B, The studio is a duplex and two different working
spaces are available: one has polyvinyl chloride tiles and the other has carpet. Because of the size, up to a group of three may work together.
Total 6 studios Size: 53.0m²(570.49ft2). Studio C, The studio is a duplex and two
different working spaces are available: one has polyvinyl chloride tiles and the other has carpet. The size allows up to a group of four to work together. Total 1 studio Size: 73.0m²(785.77ft2).

<Accommodation Information>
Studio Apartments are available twenty-four hours a day to facilitate artist-in- residence programs and other residency opportunities related to art production and research. The building, which is located in the middle of Tenjin-yama Park and faces a Japanese garden, provides a tranquil haven in the city.
Only basic equipment and facilities to support artistic productions are available. Participants/residents are responsible for bringing their own specific tools and equipment.
No service for bed linens and sheets. Food and cleaning services are also unavailable. (Convenience stores and supermarkets are nearby.)
Smoking is not allowed in any studio.
Reservations are accepted up to twelve months in advance of your arrival date and are required at least ten business days prior to your arrival.

International Open Call Program Artists who will stay at the Studio for a month will display works/make presentations of the results of their work in the Exhibition Space for a week. ? Open call system: Applicant screening is conducted. Studio usage fee/free of charge ? Conditions: Artists need to implement exchange programs including talks and workshops. (In relation with the program for local revitalization by art.) After consultation with the director concerning the project content, artists will produce works during their residence and take responsibility for the set-up and removal of their exhibitions through self-management and self-build method. Applicants are accepted regardless of nationality, district of residence, age, gender, or field of activity.

How to reach

By train

You can come to Sapporo Station by train from train stations in Japan, then followings:

1) Using a subway:
The closest subway stations are on the Nanboku Line
Route 1: 11-minute walk from the west or north exit at the Sumikawa station.
Route 2: 14-minute walk from the west exit at the Minami-Hiragishi station.

2) Using a bus:
Take the Jotetsu bus [Route 56] and get off the bus at “Hiragishi 1 jyo 16 chome”.

By plane

Fly from your town to International New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido!

Travel from the New Chitose Airport (Total: about 70 minutes)
Option 1: Coach bus & Subway
Take the airport coach bus to the Maruyama Bus Terminal
Get off the bus at the Sumikawa subway station

Option 2: Train & Subway
Take the JR train to the Sapporo station, the central station in Sapporo.
From the central station, take the subway to the Sumikawa station.
11-minute walk from the west exit at the Sumikawa station.
