Pike School of Art - Mississippi

General information

Brief description of organisation

Pike School of Art – Mississippi (PSA-MS) is a space for interdisciplinary creative experimentation where artists and writers with diverse backgrounds and proficiencies come together and interact in a rural setting in America’s Deep South. PSA-MS offers residencies, workshops, talks, and space for art-making and discursive research. Activities take place in and near the city of McComb and the town of Summit in Pike County, Mississippi.

PSA-MS encourages artwork and curatorial or writing projects that create articulations about or in response to the Deep South, including Mississippi’s and Louisiana’s histories of conflict and adjustment between Old and New World societies and Europeans’ early relationship with the indigenous populations. Projects about the ongoing African-American struggle to achieve full participation in American society are especially welcome.

Brief description of residency program

We are pleased to announce the next Pike School of Art - Mississippi (PSA-MS) residency.

Except for the last two days of the residency, which take place in New Orleans, you will stay in a cabin in Percy Quin State Park, just a few miles from McComb, Mississippi. The setting is rustic but your accommodations will be comfortable and self-contained. Complete kitchens include utensils and dishes. (No microwaves.) The cabins have heat and air conditioning, and most have wood-burning fireplaces.

You will share a cabin – and possibly a bathroom – with one or two other people but your bedroom will be private. Other residents will be in nearby cabins, allowing collaboration and social interaction.

Several day trips are planned, all designed to enhance an understanding of the South, its history and its culture. Residents are of course welcome to participate in these outings (entrance fees and lunches are included) but they are merely an option and not a requirement.
