Main & Station Nonesuch Kickshaws

General information

Brief description of organisation

Located on the Minas Basin (a small arm of the Atlantic Ocean) Main & Station Nonesuch is housed in a re-purposed & renovated building, originally a post office, customs house & armoury that was abandoned for 43 years. It now serves as an art residency. We offer workshops, lectures, exhibitions, performances & other events as well as a vegetarian cafe and secondhand book shop.

We provide space and support for creation in all endeavours which includes all of the arts as well as geology, geography, ecology, anthropology, philosophy etc.

The Minas Basin is world renowned for fossils, gems & minerals, as well as for having some of the highest tides on earth and an ever changing geography.

Brief description of residency program

The Nonesuch mission is to have fun and to encourage artistic activity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community involvement.

Travel can be quite a stimulus to ideas and creativity. The residency program allows participants the opportunity to work creatively in one or more new environments. Support to the community is via arts programming, seminars, collaborations, small venue presentations, and partnerships.

Residencies are available to established and emerging visual, literary, sound and performance artists as well as philosophers, historians, geologists, geographers etc. and anyone else whose application is accepted. We also have Chefs´ Residencies available in the Nonesuch Café.

The program is open to anyone 18 years of age and older. Criteria for acceptance include curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm.

Facilities may be reserved in advance for groups and workshops.

AIRs are provided a place to stay, space to work, and the opportunity to exhibit, teach, and interact with the community as well as a certain amount of support for these activities; for example, for an exhibition we usually provide some promotions and an opening (vernissage) plus someone to keep the exhibition open to the public. Residency fees help support the entire operation.

Although we encourage it strongly as it enhances the residency experience, AIRs are not obliged to exhibit, teach, perform, et cetera. The only thing we request is that each AIR at least present something about their work to the public, often in the form of an Artist’s Talk.
