Hardy Creatives Residency

General information

Brief description of organisation

The creator of the residency, Janelle Hardy (myself), is an artist, with an active national exhibition record in dance, visual arts and writing.

I have written for regional and national publications, exhibited in the visual arts, presented and performed dance choreographies, and combined disciplines, most recently at the Whitehorse Nuit Blanche Festival 2015.

I also have a great deal of administration experience, and have been teaching art, creativity, culture and embodiment workshops at colleges, universities and out of her own living room.

I´ve earned a BA in Anthropology, an MA in Dance, and another degree in Hellerwork Structural Integration. I´m more than happy to share my experiences and knowledge with the artists in residence.

Hardy Creatives Residency is a small scale residency with a focus on providing a small and intimate space for an artist in their creative development phase.

This is generally the phase in which it looks like ´nothing is happening´, the phase in which artists do a great deal of research, development, creations and discarding of ideas as they sort through and discover what their own aesthetic and goals are as they work towards building a body of work and an artistic voice.

Because this creation phase usually looks ´unproductive´ it is often hard to find support for it. Many residencies demand/require a product of some sort by the end of it.

As a practicing artist who has also worked in arts admin as well, I understand both those demands, and also the necessity of providing time and space to simply explore. So my primary aim in offering this residency program is to offer a space that honours the creative process.

A secondary aim is to explicitly make clear that children are welcome, and to make it clear that anyone who is a single parent artist is welcome to apply, and do a residency with their children.

This is a gap in the artistic community, and it´s one I´ve felt acutely as a single mother artist, the struggle to feel supported in creating while also parenting, and having a greater financial burden than many of my childless artist peers.

Those two circumstances have limited my access to time and space to create, while also feeling supported and understood. And thus, my objective is to offer space for other single parent artists in similar circumstances.

Brief description of residency program

The Hardy Creatives Residency Program offers one emerging or professional artist at a time the live/work space and time to create, daydream, and dig in to their creative practice, while also having the opportunity to live in and explore the stunning Okanagan Valley on the west coast of Canada.

This is a unique opportunity to inhabit a creative space that is also a family space.

You´ll be able to indulge in a great deal of solo creative time (we are both gone during the days during the week), yet also share in a warm home environment, and participate in social activities with us (at your preference).

The Hardy Creatives Residency can accommodate one resident at a time, and the artist receives a bedroom and a private in-house studio space.

The artist-in-residence will share living space with a practicing artist mother Janelle, and her teenage daughter Ellazora in a beautiful, well-built character home situated in downtown Vernon, BC, Canada.

Interested artists may apply to stay for between 2 weeks to 3 months.

Special circumstances can be made for partners/children, and particular accommodation will be given to single mother artists with children (the fee will be increased slightly to reflect additional costs, in these circumstances). Please inquire for further details.

Vernon, in the Okanagan Valley is a place where access to the arts and the wilderness, are equally close and powerful.

The Valley is stunning and exceptionally inspiring. A simple bike ride can take you to the lake, mountains, forests, wineries, farms, and we´re also a 10 minute walk from the biggest farmer´s market in BC, a performing arts centre, recreation centre, coffee shops and grocery stores and the downtown core of Vernon.

It´s an exceptionally inspiring, nurturing and creative area of Canada, and quite unique.
