Brief description of residency program

MADD is located in Niterói, really close to Rio de Janeiro. So, the residents will be immersed in a vibrant artistic and cultural life. The city is experiencing a “cultural boom”, which represents a unique opportunity on visibility and networking. Through the gallery´s connections the artists will be in touch with important and recognized local organizations such as: MAC - Niterói Contemporary Art Museum, Ingá Museum, and Fluminense Federal University´s Art Center. Besides, MADD is related to social and ecological programs, what can be brought into the residents´ “experiences package”.
As a residency located in a stunning, relaxing and green environment, MADD encourages artists to draw inspiration from the place and take advantage of what the surroundings provide. Beyond our gallery´s walls, we encourage and welcome community engagement and place emphasis on collaborations of all kinds.

The program includes:

1. Shared studio: for up to six artists. Each one has his/her own desk.

2. Technical studios equipped with assistance in silicone & resin, welding, screen printing, carpentry, cold ceramics and etc …

3. A large shared outdoor area providing additional working and interaction spaces. The artists will have the opportunity to work either in groups (processing ideas and organizing events with a shared schedule) or individually (without constraints in accordance with the tools of her/his practice).

4. Library equipped with wireless and printers.

5. Multidisciplinary curatorial board. Different professionals offering research and production assistance and follow-ups and/or on-demand workshops.

6. Staff to assist with housing, coordination of arrivals and departures, translation, and studio needs.

7. Transportation: everyday transfer from your accommodation to the gallery. And, upon your arrival/leave, transfer to Tom Jobim International Airport.

8. At the end of the program, the artist may choose to set up an exhibition (collectively). MADD´s has two different exhibition rooms and will offer all the support for setting up the event.

As part of the program, residents are expected to present their research/work at an artist talk event. It´s not necessary to have a full/final body of work. The talk is merely a conversation about your main artistic concepts/ideas/questions and your experience at MADD, as a way of encouraging and initiating new dialogues for contemporary art at our local context and as an opportunity for cross- disciplinary exchange.

Residents are also stimulated (but NOT required) to exhibit their work in one of MADD´ show rooms. Exhibitions will be open to the public from 3 to 4 weeks after completion of the residence.
